When WWE 2K20 was released in October 2019, many fans were hesitant yet optimistic about the new additions to the long-standing series with the introduction of the 2K Originals DLCs, a new take on downloadable content from the previous WWE 2K games. While some fans may’ve enjoyed the more arcade-inspired style of gameplay that 2K was going for, in general WWE 2K20 was totally unplayable, with bugs and glitches plaguing the game. A combination of widespread negative fan reception and the global pandemic led to WWE 2K21 being cancelled, but 2021 could be the year that WWE games make a comeback.

Fans may not have gotten WWE 2K21 in fall 2020, but they did get a totally new WWE game in WWE 2K Battlegrounds, an arcade-style game developed by Saber Interactive, the developer behind the NBA 2K Playgrounds series. Fans drew similarities to an older arcade WWE game known as Legends of WrestleMania. The free-for-all WWE 2K Battlegrounds left interested fans with a game to play and optimism for those who wanted more out of the main WWE 2K series, with fans knowing that 2K had time to reevaluate their game and come back strong.

According to Game Rant, there were rumors that 2K Games had attended WWE’s Royal Rumble event in January to begin the face scan process of WWE Superstars for the newest WWE 2K game. This would make sense, as it is somewhat known that 2K begins scanning superstars for their yearly installment of WWE 2K around the beginning of the year, during the road to WrestleMania. Fans returned to the stands for the first time in a year in Tampa, Florida for WrestleMania 37, but they weren’t the only ones to make a return during the two-night spectacle – 2K games also revealed a teaser for the return of the WWE 2K series. But there may be more than just a new WWE 2K game coming. Here is every WWE game that could be released in 2021.

Confirmed: WWE 2K22

During night one of WrestleMania 37, 2K Games revealed that WWE 2K22 is in development and will be coming soon. While a release date has yet to be revealed, it can be assumed that 2K will continue the cycle of releasing the latest WWE 2K game in October. The beginning of roster reveals could also begin around August which is the month that WWE hosts one of its biggest events of the year: SummerSlam. With 2K having over a year to prepare, fans are hoping for a new and improved game this fall.

Speculated: WWE 2K Battlegrounds 2

The release of WWE 2K Battlegrounds wasn’t meant to be a placeholder for WWE 2K21. Similar to the NBA 2K Playgrounds series which is meant to be side game from the main NBA 2K series, WWE 2K Battlegrounds was made to be fun side wrestling game for players who are fond of more arcade gameplay. NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 was released a year after NBA Playgrounds, so it wouldn’t be surprising if WWE 2K Battlegrounds 2 follows suit.

Speculated: WWE SuperCard Season 8

Initially released in 2014, WWE SuperCard is WWE’s primary free-to-play mobile game developed by Cat Daddy Games and published by 2K Games. Season 7 of SuperCard released in November 2020, introducing new features such as On-Demand Play and a new event called WARGAMES, which was inspired by the NXT event of the same name. Like the main WWE 2K games, WWE SuperCard releases a new season every year, so fans can possibly expect season 8 of WWE SuperCard to come this fall.

WWE fans have a lot to look forward to as WWE and 2K Games slowly return to normalcy. Soon fans will once again be able to watch their favorite superstars compete live, and come fall they’ll be able to play as their favorite superstars in new games. Let’s just hope the newest WWE games don’t disappoint like the Army of the Dead promotion at WrestleMania Backlash.
