The Fab Five of fabulous weddings have arrived: Netflix’s much-awaited reality show Say I Do features Jeremiah Brent, Thai Nguyen and Gabriele Bertaccini — its own team of fabulous experts ready to give couples a makeover. From the creators of Queer Eye, the unscripted show is a wholesome combination of the makeover format and popular wedding shows like Say Yes to The Dress. The show’s panel of experts, much like everyone’s favorite extraordinaires from Queer Eye, help eight couples who haven’t had a chance to make it down the aisle plan the proposals and their weddings. The series premiered on the 1st of July and is raking in good reviews.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Netflix described the unscripted series as a showcase that features deserving couples who always intended to marry, but, for one reason or the other, were never able to see their dreams become reality. This is why they assembled a dream team of interior designer Jeremiah Brent, fashion designer Thai Nguyen and chef Gabriele Bertaccini to make the couples’ dream fairytale weddings come to life. While Queer Eye celebrates more of everyday life and occasions, Say I Do spells out fantasy and dives into the lives of the couples who’ve dreamed about these special days their entire lives but weren’t able to pursue them.

The three experts put their skills into action to plan a personalized proposal, followed by the ultimate dream wedding. The feel-good binge-worthy show does add a bit of mystery to the format as well – one half of the couple is kept in the dark by their significant other as they’re prepped for the proposal by the three stylish men. What follows next is an extravagant celebration of love for the couple which the talented trio help put together in just one week! Exceptional at everything they do, Brent, Nguyen and Bertaccini are all set to become Netflix’s next reality TV sensations. While the show introduces the emotional life stories of its couples, it also allows the experts to open up about their own personal journeys.

Jeremiah Brent

One half of the Nate and Jeremiah duo from TLC, interior designer Jeremiah Brent puts together the space and the schedule of events; he’s in charge of the aesthetics, right from the venue to décor to the seating. Brent runs a successful design firm in Los Angeles and New York City that he founded when he was 24, but likes to consider himself “an entertainer and curator of beauty.” He believes that weddings are an exploration of all the senses, and about how a person feels when they walk into the space. His love for design and building furniture led to him becoming the resident interior designer in The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Brent has a “no rules” approach to the California Modern style, inspired by his home state, and is married to Nate Berkus with whom he appears on TLC’s Nate and Jeremiah By Design and HGTV’s Nate and Jeremiah: Save My House. Their own wedding took place at the New York Public Library and the couple has two children (Poppy, 5, and Oskar, 2) together through surrogacy. “The one thing I have always believed in is the power of LOVE, its ability to connect, change lives, open minds, and start conversations,” he posted on Instagram while speaking of his “third baby,Say I Do.

Thai Nguyen

Thai Nguyen, on the other hand, is a designer to the stars. The Vietnamese-American creative was raised in Los Angeles and learned to sew at age 9. He worked with BCBG Max Azria as an associate designer after graduating from LA’s Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandizing (FIDM). He then launched his own label Thai Nguyen Atelier before appearing on Bravo’s Launch My Line. He’s dressed up stars like Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande and Katy Perry, amongst others, and is recognized for providing expert craftsmanship in which “couture meets custom.” A dedicated team of highly skilled seamstresses use only the most deluxe hand finishes and couture techniques to ensure the perfect finish at the Atelier, explains Nguyen on his brand’s website.

Nguyen is in a committed relationship himself, but like the couples featured on Say I Do, he isn’t married — yet. In episode 6, as the three experts watch Jason and Jonathan walk down the aisle together, Nguyen turns to the others and wonders when he could possibly have the same experience. He has a fiancé and partner of over a decade who he hopes his family will support wholly when he finally gets married. He also mentioned how he was waiting for the show to come out so he could translate the episode for his parents into Vietnamese. “Maybe they haven’t been exposed to that kind of love and that kind of beauty. It’s my job to give them time and let them see this,” he said in an interview to OprahMag.

Gabriele Bertaccini

In charge of catering for the show’s grand weddings is Gabriele Bertaccini, who shuttles his way between Arizona, Florence, New York, California, and London for his culinary adventures. The self-proclaimed “crazy Italian chef” is the founder of Il Tocco Food, a catering company. But the venture that further adds to his vibrant personality is Culinary Mischief, the first underground dining event in Arizona and California that does not state the location, who you’re dining with, or what will be served, taking the guests out of their comfort zones. Gabriele is an alum of Bernardo Buontalenti, one of Italy’s most prestigious culinary institutes where he enrolled at age of 13. He also moonlights as a spinning instructor at Flywheel during his free time and is a Doggie Dad to four Australian Shepherds — Perla, Mieli, Summit, and Bernard. The accomplished chef who met his boyfriend right before filming Say I Do also holds degrees in journalism and PR from the Arizona State University. While comparisons with Queer Eye’s Antoni Porowski are naturally going to happen, Bertaccini thinks that it’s their mutual passion for food and what it represents that acts like glue and brings people together.

Gabriele Bertaccini offers one of the most vulnerable moments on Netflix’s Say I Do, when the host reveals that he is living with HIV during a heart-to-heart conversation with groomsman Marcus. The conversation took the sudden emotional turn as the two were discussing wedding dinner options considering Marcus’ Type 1 Diabetes. Such moments are the heart of the new reality TV series. With such brilliant and creative minds helming the project, Netflix’s Say I Do portrays a passion and emotions that are undeniably real and raw. The collective mission for all three experts, Jeremiah Brent, Thai Nguyen and Gabriele Bertaccini, is to find ways to translate the couples’ stories into an unforgettable celebrations of love. Be it ideas for prospective future weddings or just wholesome, gratifying reality TV that one might be looking for, the show ticks off all the right boxes when it comes to feel-good content. The initial audience responses have all been positive and emotionally charged o far, with a few fans even urging others to keep the tissues handy before pressing play.
