After a production shutdown and release date delays due to the ongoing pandemic, Cinderella was finally released in select theaters and to streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The musical adaptation of the classic story, written and directed by Kay Cannon, is based on an idea by James Corden, who produced the film starring Camila Cabello, Frozen’s Idina Menzel, and Pierce Brosnan. 

Cinderella is a 2021 retelling with a modern twist. In this iteration of the popular story, Cinderella is an aspiring fashion designer who dreams of having her own business. This take on the character isn’t the only difference Cinderella makes, but it is perhaps the biggest when comparing the film to previous reimaginings. The film is the first musical adaptation of the story since 1997’s Cinderella starring Brandy and Whitney Houston and features a host of well-known songs and original ones written specifically for the film.

It’s too early to tell, but Cinderella could theoretically get a sequel if it’s successful enough. The cast and filmmakers haven’t discussed it openly and it’s unclear if there are negotiations being made, but there are plenty more storytelling avenues a sequel could explore if the filmmakers are up for it. Is Cinderella 2 Happening? Latest Updates & Prediction

Nothing is official and there haven’t been any formal discussions being had about a possible sequel for this modern-day remake of Cinderella. That said, it’s extremely rare that any version of Cinderella gets a sequel as the story is typically self-contained and closes with a happy ending for the titular character. Other Cinderella movies, including Ever After and Ella Enchanted were all a one-and-done deal and it’s likely 2021’s Cinderella will be the same. 

Granted, Disney’s 1950 Cinderella landed a sequel in Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, but they came decades after the original and went straight to video. A Cinderella Story (which starred Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray) got a straight-to-video sequel with Selena Gomez’s Another Cinderella Story (and several more sequels thereafter), and they each followed different characters. So if Cinderella 2 does happen, it could go that route.

Cinderella 2 Release Date Prediction

Since there is no official word on whether or not there will be a sequel for 2021’s Cinderella, it’s hard to predict when a release date for the film would be set. If the film is successful and there is interest, then it’s possible Amazon could begin developing a sequel near the end of this year. Cinderella took two to three months to film after initially being announced in spring 2019. So if a sequel ever gets the greenlight at Amazon, then fans could expect it to be released in 2023 at the earliest. 

Cinderella 2 Cast & Characters: Predicting Who Returns

If Cinderella 2 ever moves forward, audiences should expect Camila Cabello to be back in the leading role, alongside Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert. Considering where everyone ended up, it’s also likely that the rest of the principal cast — Idina Menzel as Vivian, Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan, Minnie Driver as Queen Beatrice, and Tallulah Greive as Princess Gwen — will also return. Depending on what the story might entail, however, Billy Porter’s Fab G, Cinderella’s fairy godparent, could also reappear for another quick bit of magic. If the story follows Cinderella’s travels, a sequel could also include Queen Tatiana, played by Beverley Knight. As for James Corden a mice-turned-footman, it’s likely he could return, but only in the roles of talking mice.

Vivian takes up playing piano again and a sequel could further develop Cinderella’s stepmother and what’s next for her and her daughters as well. There is also Princess Gwen, who is succeeding her father to become queen of the kingdom and a potential Cinderella 2 could showcase what her new role entails and what she’s been doing in her Rowan’s place.
