From the creators of the popular 2014 MMORPG Black Desert Online, Korean game studios Pearl Abyss presents a new adventurous tale – Crimson Desert – a medieval fantasy experience that seems to have a whole lot to offer. The open-world action RPG tells the story of a variety of characters, from powerful nobles to lowly peasants, as they struggle to survive through various biomes and the dangerous dwellers that live in them, as well as enduring the political conflicts in Pywel’s enormous continent.

Crimson Desert’s reveal trailer debuted last November, showing viewers a glimpse of an epic, gorgeous world and the hardships its inhabitants must face. The Game Awards 2020 featured a lengthy gameplay trailer to further excite anticipating fans, demonstrating combat-heavy battle scenes, breathtaking environments, and fantastical elements like portals and dragons.

Crimson Desert claims to be a game where allegiances are tested and heroes and legends are made. Players won’t be able to take on too many threats on their own, and must seek out allies and gain their trust to form a band of mercenaries to face off against mythical beasts, hostile combatants, maniacal rulers, and many other dangers found throughout Pywel.

Crimson Desert’s Story & Setting

Crimson Desert is set in the expansive yet divided world of Pywel, a war-torn realm with harsh deserts, giant and dangerous cities, vast plains, and so much more to discover – not too unlike Black Desert Online’s setting. The Unifier of Lands, King of Demeniss, lies helpless in a coma. Some aim to exploit this weakness by exerting their own rule while others merely seek independence.

Players take on the role of MacDuff, a mercenary who must reclaim his people’s lands from threatening foes like corrupt rulers or a mysterious Desert-based cult by assembling a team of battle-hardened fighters. To do this, MacDuff must travel Pywel to gain the trust of unique characters from a variety of regions who each have a distinct backstory and own reasons for joining, avoiding, or opposing MacDuff’s mercenary company. Players can explore the broad plains of Akapen, try to survive the inhabitable cold lands of Kweiden, and venture through the Desert Oases as they hack and slash their way through enemies in the shoes of a protagonist who greatly resembles Jon Snow from Game of Thrones.

Each area features its own distinctive look, although Pearl Abyss warns that “gritty realism often precedes aesthetic beauty,” and that players may have to “scrape away the grime to see it.” Players may encounter “filthy alleys, destitute hovels, and marketplace language that would make even a Troll blush.” More than a typical fantasy setting, Pywel may contain mysterious beings from a distant world, “perhaps even a world that exists in a time yet to be.”

Crimson Desert’s Gameplay & Trailers

Players’ actions, whether big or small, influence Crimson Desert’s story – which has a heavy focus on single player but contains multiplayer elements like PvP and a combat system that allows players to utilize team attacks in a shared world. Players can unravel ancient mysteries with the aid of a range of weapons that have countless customization options, making this open world an RPG that many are looking forward to.

The type of warrior a player can be depends on which weapons they chose, and how they want to wield them. Pistols, swords, cannons, axes, and even hand-mounted cannons can all be utilized in Crimson Desert. Additionally, weapons can be enchanted with the use of alchemy to gain further abilities.

Crimson Desert’s Release Date

Pearl Abyss projects Crimson Desert to release in the winter of 2021, although no exact date has been specified at this time. It will be available for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation systems. Pearl Abyss aims to keep fans updated as much as possible in the upcoming months before the game’s launch.
