1997’s Cube proved to be one of the most creative sci-fi/horror films of the decade, and spawned two sequels, but will a Cube 4 ever materialize? An independently produced film made on a small budget, Cube reinforced the idea that that having lots of money to work with is not at all a requirement to make effective horror. Some of the best horror films ever released were made on the cheap, such as John Carpenter’s Halloween and Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, or even something like found footage classic The Blair Witch Project.

Cube may not have quite the cultural cache as the above mentioned films, but to those who love smart mixes of sci-fi and horror, director Vincenzo Natali’s movie holds a special place in genre history. Cube‘s concept is ingenious, but also simple. A group of strangers wake up to find themselves locked inside the titular structure, which houses room upon room of different colors, many of which contain death traps that only require the slightest misstep to trigger.

That setup makes Cube an unrelentingly tense exercise, as the viewer is constantly aware any character could meet a horrible demise at a moment’s notice. Cube‘s sequels, 2002’s Cube 2: Hypercube and 2004’s Cube Zero, aren’t as good as the first, but are still worth watching, as they serve to reveal more about how the Cube came to be and what its purpose is. Many fans would love to see a Cube 4, and here’s everything we know about the prospect.

Cube 4: Will It Ever Happen?

For many years after Cube Zero, a prequel to the first Cube, released, there was no noise about a fourth installment. That changed in 2011, when rumors circulated that Lionsgate was looking to revive the franchise, possibly with a 3D entry called simply Cube 3D. That’s not hard to believe, as the 3D craze was big at the time. However, no further developments surfaced until spring 2015, when it was reported that Lionsgate had decided to re-imagine the original Cube, and call it Cubed. Saman Kesh was set to direct, but the project stalled in 2016, with producer Jon Spaihts saying the decision had been made to go in a new creative direction. No further updates have been released since then, and it’ll soon be five years since Cubed was announced. Progress on a Cube 4 seems dead for now.

Cube 4 Story Details

It’s unclear what Cube 4 aka Cube 3D would’ve been about, or whether it would’ve picked up after Cube 2 or been another prequel to the original Cube. As for Cubed, it was supposed to basically be a remake of the first film, retaining its premise, but inserting a new conflict between AI and humanity, leading to the rise of a new digital race. Whether Cubed would’ve recast the original characters or created new ones is unknown. British playwright Philip Gawthorne was attached to write Cubed‘s script at one point.
