Everything We Know About Edge of Tomorrow 2

Here’s everything we know so far about Tom Cruise’s sci-fi sequel Edge Of Tomorrow 2, AKA Live Die Repeat And Repeat. The original Edge Of Tomorrow followed Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) who is forced to take part in a landing operation against an invading alien force. Cage – having no combat experience – is swiftly killed but finds himself resurrected via a time loop. Cage uses this ability to improve his combat skills and teams with Emily Blunt’s war hero to find a way to stop the invasion.

While Edge Of Tomorrow contained all the thrills and setpieces of a blockbuster, it was the witty script and chemistry between Cruise and Blunt that made it a word of mouth favorite. While the film was something of a financial disappointment, fans craved a follow-up. The movie was a solid hit on Blu-ray and DVD and it was confirmed in 2016 Edge Of Tomorrow 2 was in development.

Doug Liman Has An ‘Awesome’ Concept For Edge Of Tomorrow 2

The original Edge Of Tomorrow ended on a happy note, with Cage defeating the Omega that controlled the aliens and being time-looped back to before the landing operation. The logic of this ending is somewhat murky, which is something co-writer Christopher McQuarrie promises will be addressed in the sequel. Doug Liman claims to have an idea for Edge Of Tomorrow 2 that will ‘revolutionize’ how sequels are made, and it will also be a prequel that acts as a sequel.

No synopsis for Edge Of Tomorrow 2 has been released but it will pick up from the original’s ending and reveal Cage isn’t free of the time loop just yet. In addition to Cage and Blunt, Liman has teased a new third character will be involved and will steal the movie. Blunt has also labeled Liman’s sequel concept ‘awesome.’

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Will Have A New Title

The working title for Edge Of Tomorrow was All You Need Is Kill, the name of the Japanese novel the movie was based on. Both the studio and Liman felt this was the wrong title for what’s essentially a sci-fi comedy, but they disagreed over what the movie should be called. Liman pitched Live Die Repeat while a Warner Bros executive decided on Edge Of Tomorrow. When the movie underperformed in 2014 Liman blamed the generic title, and for the movie’s home released it was rebranded Live Die Repeat, or in some cases Live Die Repeat: Edge Of Tomorrow. Liman wants to make this branding permanent with the sequel currently titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat.

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Will End The Franchise

The only reason Liman wants to return Edge Of Tomorrow 2 is that he loves the sequel idea. Fans shouldn’t expect it to become a long-running series, however, with Liman dubbing Edge Of Tomorrow a strict ‘two-movie franchise,’ with the sequel wrapping up the story and any remaining loose ends. He also claims the sequel will be smaller in scale and will feature less action.

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Doesn’t Have A Release Date

Despite being greenlit in 2016, Edge Of Tomorrow 2 doesn’t have a fixed release date. There were signs the sequel would move quickly once Liman signed on, but between the screenplay being developed and the key players busy on other projects, it might be a few years off. Both Liman and Blunt have also stressed the stars need to align for a sequel to happen, including everybody having a gap in their schedules to do it.

Tom Cruise And Emily Blunt Will Return For Edge Of Tomorrow 2

Outside of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, no other performers are signed on for Edge Of Tomorrow 2. Given the nature of the premise, actors from the first movie like Brendan Gleeson and Noah Taylor could presumably come back, but nothing is confirmed thus far. Sadly, actor Bill Paxton passed away in 2017, meaning his gruff Sergeant Farell will likely be left out of the sequel as a mark of respect.

The Mission: Impossible Sequels Could Delay Edge Of Tomorrow 2

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie have become regular collaborators over the last decade, with the latter directing the last two installments in the Mission: Impossible series and working on the screenplays for Edge Of Tomorrow and Top Gun: Maverick. Mission: Impossible – Fallout was released to great critical and financial success in 2018, with McQuarrie later signing on to write and direct two further sequels that will shoot back-to-back. The first sequel is due in 2021, which leaves little time for Cruise and McQuarrie to work on Edge Of Tomorrow 2, meaning it could be delayed further.

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Doesn’t Have A Trailer Yet

Edge Of Tomorrow hasn’t started filming so there’s no trailer available. The trailer for the original movie was criticized for mispresenting the movie’s comedic tone, which was considered a highlight of the final product. Edge Of Tomorrow 2 will likely course correct and selling itself on this aspect in the trailers.
