Pinocchio is getting a new film adaptation thanks to Guillermo del Toro, and here’s everything you need to know about this new version of the classic tale. Filmmakers often take inspiration from literary works for their projects, and there are some that have become quite popular among them, whether thanks to the quality of the story or to the success it had with one adaptation in particular – or sometimes both. Such is the case of The Adventures of Pinocchio, by Carlo Collodi, published in 1883 and which has been adapted to different media for years.

The most famous adaptation of the novel is that by Walt Disney Pictures in 1940, simply titled Pinocchio, now considered one of the greatest animated movies ever made. Since then, Pinocchio and company have gone through a variety of adaptations with different styles and approaches to the story (he was even sent to space with an alien turtle as sidekick once), and they’re getting a new one now in stop-motion style thanks to Guillermo del Toro. Pinocchio marks Del Toro’s animated feature film debut, and after being trapped in development hell for years, it’s finally on its way to seeing the light.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Del Toro’s Pinocchio was announced in 2008 and it went through a lot of obstacles during pre-production, including not finding studios willing to finance the project. Luckily, that’s all in the past and Pinocchio is now ready to be released in 2022. Here’s everything you need to know about Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Pinocchio’s Cast & Characters

As mentioned above, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is based on Collodi’s novel, so it will see the characters that everyone now knows so well, and they will be voiced by some very well-known and beloved actors. Pinnochio counts on the talents of Gregory Mann as the title character; Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket; David Bradley as Master Geppetto; Finn Wolfhard as Lampwick/Lucignolo; Cate Blanchett as Sprezzatura the Monkey; John Turturro as Master Cherry; Ron Perlman as Mangiafuoco; Tim Blake Nelson as the Coachman; Burn Gorman as the Carabiniere; Christoph Waltz as the Fox; and Tilda Swinton as the Fairy with Turquoise Hair.

Pinocchio’s Story Details

Although Pinocchio is based on the classic novel, many details can change depending on Del Toro’s vision, and the only details known about it is that it will be a “dark, twisted” retelling of Collodi’s tale. Based on the novel, however, Pinocchio will tell the story of the title character, a mischievous marionette built by Geppetto, a poor carpenter trying to make a living as a puppeteer. The novel tells the many ups and downs that Pinocchio and Geppetto have to go through due to the marionette’s disobedience and more, and of course, there’s also the fact that Pinocchio’s nose grows every time he tells a lie. Netflix has shared that the Pinocchio in Del Toro’s movie is also a mischievous one who plays mean tricks, so it will be true to the source in that aspect.

Pinocchio Release Date: It Streams On Netflix December 2022

Once under Netflix’s wing, Pinocchio was given a 2021 release date, but as the streaming giant releases six animated movies a year, it was moved to 2022. Pinocchio now has a release date of December 2022, though Netflix hasn’t revealed the specific day yet.

Pinocchio Trailer: What Footage Has Been Released

Netflix tends to release proper trailers for its movies just a couple of weeks before their release, but given the anticipation around Pinocchio (and the long wait for it), it released a teaser in January 2022 with Sebastian J. Cricket giving a brief introduction to the story. Another quick look at Cricket was included in Netflix’s 2022 movie preview, and photos of the designs and art for Pinocchio and Geppetto have been released over the years, but that’s all that has been shown of Pinocchio so far.
