HBO has already renewed The Gilded Age for season 2 and here’s everything we know about the return of the historical drama created by Downton Abbey‘s Julian Fellowes. The Gilded Age has been a hit for HBO and appreciative audiences have been immersed in the show’s lushly-realized New York City circa 1882, and the societal conflict between Old New York and the New Money family led by George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon).

The Gilded Age began with Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) as the audience’s POV character into the world of 19th century New York high society while the series has also laudably highlighted the African-American experience of lead character Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). Of course, like Downton Abbey, upstairs/downstairs drama from the servants of the Russells and Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) is also part of The Gilded Age‘s winning formula. However, Bertha and George have emerged as fan-favorite lead characters; while Mr. Russell has proved as ruthless in business as he is a loving husband and father, Bertha has singlemindedly fought to have her family recognized by high society and its leader, Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy).

The Gilded Age Season 2 Renewal

HBO officially renewed The Gilded Age for season 2 on February 14, 2022. The Gilded Age‘s ratings have been strong for the network, exceeding those of The White Lotus, HBO’s buzzy hit from summer 2021. Thankfully, The Gilded Age‘s producers and writing team were already planning out season 2’s story even before the renewal was announced. This means that The Gilded Age season 2 can quickly begin production in 2022 since the show’s return is now set.

How The Gilded Age’s Ending Sets Up Season 2

The Gilded Age wrapped up a major storyline about George Russell’s legal problems after a train crash going into the season 1 finale. The Gilded Age‘s season 1 finale centers on whether or not Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) will attend Gladys Russell’s (Taissa Farmiga) debutante ball, thereby giving Bertha the entry into high society she desperately craves. Another major storyline to be resolved is whether Marian will elope with Mr. Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel). The Gilded Age season 2 will pick up where those stories leave off but Julian Fellowes will also likely introduce several new characters while weaving in more historical moments and people from the late 19th-century era, such as the famous Black newspaper editor T. Thomas Fortune (Sullivan Jones).

The Gilded Age Season 2’s Cast: Who Can Return?

It’s not clear yet which characters will return for The Gilded Age season 2 since so many members of the cast are Broadway stars who may have other commitments. However, it’s safe to expect series leads Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski will return. Baranski has already publicly expressed her desire to be back, although she will also have to balance her lead role in the Paramount+ hit series The Good Fight. Expect most of The Gilded Age’s other actors like Harry Richardson, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Donna Murphy, Nathan Lane, Audra McDonald, and Douglas Sills to reprise their roles in The Gilded Age season 2 as well.

The Gilded Age Season 2 Predicted Release Date

The Gilded Age season 2’s production is planned for May to October 2022 in New York City, Troy, New York, and Newport, Rhode Island. This could put The Gilded Age season 2 on track to premiere on HBO sometime in 2023, perhaps in the spring or summer. Considering that it took creator Julian Fellowes a decade to bring his vision of an American Downton Abbey to the screen, a potential wait of over a year for The Gilded Age season 2 seems much more reasonable.
