The 2001 hit ghost movie The Others, about a family who believes their home to be haunted, is getting the remake treatment, and here’s what we know. While remakes have been a thing since the earliest days of moviemaking, there definitely does seem to be a lot more of them since the turn of the century than there were before. Part of that is due to the fact that Hollywood studios have become exceedingly reliant on repurposing existing IP, seeking to capitalize on its prior following.

The genre hardest hit by the remake trend is horror, much to the chagrin of many of the genre’s diehard fans. It sometimes seems like an original horror film can be almost impossible to find in theaters, outside of the occasional efforts from smaller studios like A24 and Blumhouse, although even Blumhouse seems to be falling down the sequel/remake/reboot rabbit hole in the last couple of years. The allure of easy, or at least easier money is just too much to fight off forever.

That’s not to say that all remakes are bad. Some are very good, and every new horror remake carries with it the potential for greatness. We don’t know yet if that will come true for The Others remake, but here’s everything we do know about it so far.

The Others Remake Release Date

On April 8, 2020, it was reported that a company called Sentient Entertainment had scored the rights to remake The Others, a critical and commercial smash upon its release in 2001. However, the project is in the very early stages, and doesn’t yet have a writer or director attached. As such, it’s hard to say when The Others remake will hit theaters, as it’s unclear when it will even begin production. That’s assuming the Coronavirus pandemic allows for productions to start up again anytime soon.

The Others Remake Story Details

As a script has yet to be written, details on The Others remake’s story are scarce. However, we do know that the timeliness of the film’s themes about paranoia and self-isolation played a part in the remake happening. Fans shouldn’t expect a carbon copy of the original though, as the stated plan is to reinvent the story, and move it to a more modern setting. That’s a risk as The Others‘ Gothic period setting is one of the main reasons it worked so well. One assumes the basic plot, about a mother and her two photosensitive children menaced by ghosts in their home, will remain intact at least.
