Here’s everything we know about Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming The Scorpion King reboot. Early on in Johnson’s transition from WWE star to actor, he was tapped to play the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns. The sequel to Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy from 1999 included Johnson’s Scorpion King as a villain, and the character left a lasting impression on viewers due to the terrible CGI used at the time.

The Mummy Returns was a huge hit for Universal, though, and they decided to expand the franchise and give Johnson another chance to play the Scorpion King. The studio began working on a prequel to The Scorpion King set 5,000 years before the mainline franchise. Although the movie was not a big success, there were some discussions about continuing the franchise with Johnson. The movie played a major role in launching Johnson’s career as a leading man in 2002, but the actor became too busy to play the Scorpion King again. The franchise continued on without him in the form of direct-to-DVD films.

Universal recently tried relaunching the Mummy franchise with Tom Cruise, but plans for the Dark Universe have been abandoned. Dwayne Johnson has yet to announce any cast members for The Scorpion King. It is expected that he will not star as Scorpion King again, though. Johnson’s schedule is believed to be too busy to include a starring role in this reboot. To keep the movie’s development from slowing down, Universal will instead find a new actor to play the Scorpion King. However, Johnson might still appear, if Hollywood’s highest-paid actor can find time in his schedule.

The Scorpion King Reboot Release Date

The Scorpion King isn’t waiting on Johnson to move forward, but Universal has yet to set a release date for the reboot. The movie is currently in the early stages of development and doesn’t have a director, although the search to find one has started. If everything goes smoothly, The Scorpion King could be released in theaters (or on streaming potentially) in the next few years.
