Evil Ernie is celebrating his thirtieth anniversary with a new comic book series beginning this holiday season from writer Scott Lobdell (Uncanny X-Men, Red Hood), artist Ariel Medel (Xena: Warrior PrincessAgent 47: Birth of the Hitman), and colorist Candice Han (Heavy Metal Magazine). This new Evil Ernie series will be published by Dynamite Entertainment starting in December 2021.

Evil Ernie first appeared back in 1991, premiering in his own five-issue Eternity Comics series created by Brian Pulido and drawn by Eric Mache and primarily in his early days by Steven Hughes. A majority of the Evil Ernie-related titles were originally published by Chaos! Comics, which was founded by his creator, Pulido. Ernie is an antihero with a comedic buddy, Smiley the Psychotic Button, often seen hanging out on his attire. Dynamite acquired the various Chaos! Comics characters, including Evil Ernie, Purgatori, and Chastity, back in 2010.

In a recent press release, Dynamite Entertainment announced the new Evil Ernie series, which has been solicited in the October 2021 Previews catalog. Ernest Gleckman is a kind-hearted teenager approaching high school graduation who sings in a rock band on Saturdays. However, after Ernest is mortally wounded, he’s saved, but the cost means he has to serve as an avatar for a death cult. Every time he transforms into the supernaturally powerful Evil Ernie, Ernest loses more of his innocent self in the process. Dynamite revealed two covers for Evil Ernie #1 – the main cover by Brett Booth (X-Men LegendsTitans) and a variant by Arthur Suydam (Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth). Among the cover options will also be a blank cover, a Lobdell signed cover, a metal version of the Booth cover, and a Suydam signed virgin cover. Enjoy the covers and unlettered preview pages below:

Lobdell commented at length about the contrast between Ernest and Ernie, saying he asked himself, “What happens when you take the most evil entity in all of creation….and bond him with the nicest guy in the world?” He continued: “I saw this EVIL ERNIE series as a way to explore not only the effect of Ernie’s unadulterated evil on an innocent college student… but would Ernie react to having to reside in a vessel of pure innocence in order to achieve his goal. We’ve all come to accept that power corrupts and absolutely power corrupts absolutely. Is it possible absolute goodness can eradicate evil once and for all?” It’s a classic good vs. evil set-up, but in this case the “evil” is a character fans already love, as Evil Ernie embraces a new status quo while keeping all the qualities that make him unique.

Ernest will be dealing with real-world issues, like college, while he attempts to keep his sadistic alter-ego at bay. The first issue of Evil Ernie will be in comic book stores on December 1, 2021, revealing the beginning of the battle between the supernatural anarchist that is Evil Ernie and his innocent rocker host, Ernest Gleckman.
