The recently announced Facebook name change to Meta will also see major Oculus VR headset brand changes, with products and services taking up the new Meta name in the future. Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg opened the Facebook Connect 2021 event by announcing the parent company is changing its name from Facebook to Meta, but the Facebook social media platform will retain its original branding. The news came after weeks of speculation following the revelation of Facebook’s new corporate logo.

Oculus is best known for its virtual reality headsets, with the most recent design being the Oculus Quest 2. It’s a cheaper and more accessible option than its predecessor and doesn’t require a powerful PC or camera equipment to operate. However, the device has not been without its problems. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall for the Oculus Quest 2 earlier in 2021 following thousands of reports of the headset’s foam inserts causing skin irritation and rashes. Some users even required medical attention, forcing Facebook to suspend Quest 2 sales while it developed a new silicon cover.

Facebook’s Meta name change will also have consequences for Oculus. That’s according to Andrew Bosworth, Vice President of AR/VR at Facebook before the change of name. Bosworth explains that as part of the parent company’s restructure, the Oculus name will be dropped from its VR products and services. That means that the Oculus Quest and Oculus App will now be known as the Meta Quest and Meta Quest App. However, Bosworth also confirmed the company is looking into allowing users to access Meta products without the need for a Facebook account, a potential removal of a major restriction and point of criticism for the Oculus Quest 2.

Facebook integration with the Oculus app has caused many problems for users. The Oculus Quest 2 introduced numerous improvements and changes, but many were upset with the fact that the headset forced users to log in with Facebook accounts. Facebook accounts not in good standing could be locked out of using the device, and anyone who deleted their Facebook could lose access to Oculus games.

The fact that Facebook is changing the name of Oculus to match its own rebranding makes a lot of sense, as it will bring its entire hardware and software ecosystem under the new Meta name. This will unify various Facebook services and products under one brand for the first time. Some will likely be upset over the loss of the Oculus name, but as virtual reality becomes more mainstream, there will be fewer users even aware of the name change over time.
