The Falcon and The Winter Soldier might have teased a new Secret Avengers team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the Disney+ show focuses on Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, the Captain America mantle and legacy play a big role, too. Fans have been wondering what happened to old Steve Rogers after Avengers: Endgame ended, and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier so far has leaned into some conspiracy theories. The one that appears to have caught on in-universe to some degree is that Captain America went to space, and more specifically the moon.

Joaquín Torres asked Sam about this possibility in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode 1. While Sam says that this isn’t the case, the idea of Captain America going to space felt similar to some stories from the comics, namely the position of the Man on the Wall. The likes of Nick Fury and Bucky Barnes have taken this position and went to the moon to look out for threats that could endanger Earth. This would be an intriguing development for Steve Rogers’ MCU story, but his potential visit to space could have been for a very different purpose.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Captain America has gone to space many times in his storied comics history, but he took a trip to the cosmos semi-recently to start a new Secret Avengers team. They did not work out of the moon but instead from a miniaturized space station created by Hank Pym and Hank McCoy called The Lighthouse. Captain America left the Secret Avengers shortly after the development of this space base and put Hawkeye in charge of a roster that included Captain Britain, Valkyrie, Beast, Black Widow, Giant-Man, and others. Could The Falcon and The Winter Soldier secretly have teased old Steve Rogers made a similar trip to space to form a new covert Avengers roster?

Steve Rogers formed the original Secret Avengers team in the MCU after the events of Captain America: Civil War. The team consisted of Captain America, Falcon, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch, and they operated in secret for the two years they were on the run before Avengers: Infinity War. Once Steve returned from his life with Peggy Carter, he could’ve set up a secret team of heroes who can watch over Earth. Sam Wilson might not even know about it potentially, but it’d make sense for Steve to orchestrate some safety net from cosmic threats after dealing with Thanos recently.

The reality of the MCU is that fans and people in the universe will continue to speculate about what happened to Captain America until his fate is revealed. Maybe he did go to space to become the Man on the Wall or start a new Secret Avengers team. But there’s also a possibility that he’s passed away, which Spider-Man: Far From Home seemed to indicate, or is simply living a happy retired life. With Chris Evans potentially returning in the future, there’s a hope that an answer will come eventually – even if it isn’t in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
