Players who have been saving up their crowns in Fall Guys this week will be glad to hear that they’ll have a premium skin based on Hotline Miami to spend them on. Devolver Digital and Mediatonic’s colorful new party game has taken the world by storm in its launch week. Releasing free on PlayStation Plus and backed by a month-long beta on PC to build hype, the developers of Fall Guys have had trouble scaling their servers to the constant demand from thousands of players. It’s a good problem to have for an emerging mid-tier release, but it is a problem nonetheless.

Fall Guys is all about survival. Taking inspiration from the recent trend of battle royale games, Fall Guys has players competing in various minigame competitions where only a fraction of the field can continue to the next round. These can range from completing an obstacle course or grabbing tails off of opponents to jumping across disappearing platforms. The players can customize their little bean avatar with various skin colors, and more elaborate costumes are available for purchase in the in-game shop. For the game’s first weekend, Mediatonic has certainly pulled out all the stops.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

For the first of what will likely be many crossovers with Devolver Digital’s back catalog, Fall Guys is mashing things up with a game of a decidedly different tone. Hotline Miami is a top-down shooter with a gritty ’80s aesthetic. It’s a bloody affair that acts as a stark contrast to Fall Guys‘ colorful foam-filled arenas, but Devolver Digital nevertheless announced that Hotline Miami costumes are coming to the game on its Twitter account today. Players will need to win 10 games to rack up enough currency to earn the costume – five each for the top and bottom halves of the skin. It’s quite a challenge, especially for players who haven’t yet won a match or those coming to the game specifically for the Hotline Miami crossover.

While Hotline Miami is the first crossover to appear in Fall Guys, plenty of other entities have been pitching themselves to the game of the moment. On Twitter, Walmart Gaming Canada and State Farm Insurance proposed in-game costumes based on their employee’s uniforms. Chuck E. Cheese has been streaming the game on the brand’s Twitch channel, to much success. Even Scottish accessories brand GT Omega took things a step further, proposing a chair/guy hybrid that the Fall Guys social media ambassador was less than enthusiastic about. It turns out, while Fall Guys do look incredibly squishy, they are not designed to be sat on.

The success of Fall Guys is something that many smaller games aspire to, and it shows how vital ease of access is to a new multiplayer game. With everything from Fortnite to Halo Infinite offering free to play modes and Epic Games handing out free games every week like they’re going out of style, there are more ways than ever for any gamer to spend their time without spending a dime. As seen with practically forgotten titles like Rocket Arena and Bleeding Edge, developers have to be ready to go at launch with both a compelling pitch and a gameplay loop good enough to keep players coming backs. It’s clear that Fall Guys didn’t trip on its way to grabbing the crown.

Fall Guys is currently available on PS4 and PC.
