With Fallout: New Vegas 2 in very early talks, fans have speculated how the sequel can move forward without one of the most game-defining companions, Craig Boone. Located in the independent city of Novac, Boone is one of the earliest companions the player will come across and will benefit new players the most. With one of the highest Perception stats in the game, Boone benefits ranged players and grants the Spotter perk that highlights enemies being aimed at. However, when players meet the former First Recon NCR army soldier, Boone’s backstory will undoubtedly impact the player.

In one of the most disastrous events in the history of the NCR faction in Fallout: New Vegas, Boone would regrettably participate in the Bitter Spring Massacre that led to a dozen civilian deaths. Sometime after, Boone’s pregnant wife is kidnapped by Legion slavers, and as mercy, he would kill her to spare her a life of slavery. Boone stands apart from the rest of the companions in Fallout: New Vegas in that he has both incredible stats and a compelling backstory.

While Craig Boone is an essential part of Fallout: New Vegas, it’s less likely that he will appear in Fallout New Vegas 2. Unlike Fallout 3 and Fallout 76, New Vegas‘ approach to storytelling was more open-ended, leaving the outcome up to the player. Boone alone has up to seven endings depending on the player’s actions. Despite New Vegas arguably being the best Fallout game to get a sequel, Boone’s absence in New Vegas 2 could hurt its success. While Boone not appearing can be disheartening for most players, there is hope for him to appear in Fallout New Vegas 2 in some capacity.

Fallout New Vegas 2 Can Explore Boone’s Actions After Fallout: New Vegas

While Fallout: New Vegas is pretty open-ended depending on the player’s actions, most of the endings with Boone have him active somehow. Fallout New Vegas 2 could explore one of the more optimistic endings with Boone as he integrates back into New Vegas after the game’s events, be it through rejoining the NCR or becoming a hired gun. Moreover, characters from past Fallout games have been referenced in future installments, and Boone can appear in Fallout New Vegas 2 this way. With the possibility that New Vegas 2 could be in a new city and Fallout: New Vegas not having a concrete canon, the sequel could bring Boone back at the most or reference him at the least.

Given the narrative direction of Fallout: New Vegas and how Fallout: New Vegas 2 are in very early talks, it’s uncertain that Craig Boone will appear. Fortunately, characters in Fallout games like Harold have a habit of reappearing somehow, and Boone can follow suit in some capacity. Boone is one of the most essential and iconic companions in Fallout: New Vegas; while the direction of Fallout: New Vegas 2 is uncertain, what is for sure is that there is no New Vegas without Boone.
