When a show has been on the air for over two decades, it’s only natural that some speed-bumps will arise and force the series to make adjustments, and Family Guy has certainly had its fair-share of speed-bumps, causing some episodes to get the butt-end of the ratings-stick.

Despite having to overcome these obstacles, the Griffin family has soldiered on and continued to make fans and audiences clutch their guts with hilarious jokes. That being said, even a show as funny as Family Guy is bound to create a couple of episodes that don’t stack up to the rest.

10 Jungle Love, Season 4 (7.3)

When Chris finally entered high-school during this episode, he got a painful-welcome when the upperclassmen started “paddling” him for being a freshman. After a very brief talk with Brian, Chris decides to run away and join the Peace Corps, getting sent to South America where he must live among the natives. Luckily, Chris immediately hits it off with the tribe (engaging them in dance) which, by their laws, caused Chris to then be engaged with the Chief’s daughter. When the rest of the family show up at the village to bring Chris home, Chris declares that he wants to stay… only to be run out of the village when the tribe finds out that he is a freshman.

9 The Son Also Draws, Season 1 (7.3)

Back in the first season, Chris wasn’t as dopey as he is nowadays and his character was actually quite artistic, but he also didn’t know how to express to Peter that he didn’t want to be in the Boy Scouts. However, due to a lack of merit badges, Chris gets kicked out anyway – which prompts Peter to drive the family to the National Scouts headquarters in New York to get his son reinstated. However, along the way, Lois loses the family’s car to an Indian casino… causing Peter and Chris to have to go on a “spiritual journey” in order to reclaim their car from the Casino.

8 Bill & Peter’s Bogus Journey, Season 5 (7.2)

Family Guy has never shied away from poking-fun at U.S. presidents, but things got taken to a whole different level with this episode. Peter, on a health-kick after going to the gym for 15 minutes, tries to lift a limousine and (naturally) throws his back out. The limousine happens to be owned by Bill Clinton, who then befriends Peter and makes him tag-along on a series of crazy adventures that make Peter feel young again. However, when Lois goes to confront Bill about his behavior, she accidentally cheats on Peter and sleeps with the former President. As a result, Peter requests to sleep with Lois’s mother (which she accepts) but ends up not being able to go through with it.

7 There’s Something About Paulie, Season 2 (6.9)

Don’t feel bad, Peter – everybody has accidentally put a hit out on their wife at some point or another. When Peter gets into debt with the mob and is forced to spend the evening with an insufferable man named Big Fat Paulie, he gets roped into becoming his friend.

However, due to his gangster background, Lois tells Peter to stop hanging out with the man… which causes Big Fat Paulie to put a hit out on Lois. Peter winds up going to the wedding of The Don’s daughter and asks The Don to take the hit off his wife – which he grants.

6 Extra Large Medium, Season 8 (6.8)

This episode dealt with two main plotlines, the first following Peter thinking he’s psychic, while the second followed Stewie and his attempt at helping Chris get a date with a girl he liked. Peter’s story begins when Stewie and Chris get lost in the woods and a different psychic tells Lois they’ll be ok, prompting Brian to use Peter as an example to prove that all psychics are phony – only for Peter to then convince himself he’s actually psychic. Meanwhile, Stewie uses a catchy-musical to help Chris get ready for his date with Ellen, only for the girl to treat Chris horribly and have the relationship end after just one evening.

5 Padre de Familia, Season 6 (6.8)

Things drastically changed for the Griffins in this episode when it was revealed (via a graphic story from his mother) that Peter was actually born in Mexico (technically making him Mexican) causing him to lose his job at the brewery. In response, Peter gets a job as a servant at Lois’s father’s mansion where he works alongside other illegal Mexican immigrants. However, when the family decides to join Peter and has finally had enough of their new lifestyle, Lois’s father manages to get Peter his U.S. citizenship back and things return to normal.

4 The Kiss Seen Around the World, Season 3 (6.7)

Meg had no idea what she was getting herself into this episode when she accepted a job at the local news station as an interim reporter. Normally a safe job, Meg gets sent to the scene of a shooting at City Hall with fellow interim, Neil, and the two get pinned down by the shooter. Thinking death is imminent, Meg shares her first kiss with Neil – only to be saved by Hugh Downs. This causes Neil to fall massively in love with Meg, but due to her rejections, he returns to the scene of their kiss and plans to kill himself – only to have his fall broken by Meg, which saves his life.

3 Foreign Affairs, Season 9 (6.4)

Joe and Bonnie might not be the perfect couple, but it was revealed that things were much worse with the couple than they appeared when Bonnie admitted to Lois that she wanted to have an affair while on vacation in France. Lois, appalled by Bonnie’s actions, does everything she can to try and distract/dissuade Bonnie from going through with it, but her actions prove useless as Bonnie hooks up with a French man named Francois.

However, in a twist, Joe shows up at the last second (having been called by Lois) and proves his love to Bonnie by standing up and walking (later revealed to be a trick with Quagmire being taped to the back of Joe).

2 The Juice is Loose, Season 7 (6.3)

Another controversial topic, another low-rating. During this episode, Peter wins a round of golf with former NFL running back, O.J. Simpson – which immediately gives the rest of the family pause (due to the allegations that O.J. was a murderer). However, Peter decides to befriend O.J. and invite him to live with his family which only furthers tension in the household. Things finally come to a head when the rest of Quahog demands O.J. leave town, but O.J. gives an impassioned speech about how he’s not a perfect person and that he’s trying to be better, resulting in the town accepting him… only for him to then murder three random citizens before being run out of town.

1 Screams of Silence: The Story of Brenda Q, Season 10 (6.2)

This particular episode’s low-rating might not be because of unfunny material, but rather the sensitive topic that the jokes were about. When Quagmire’s sister, Brenda, and her abusive boyfriend, Jeff, come to visit, Quagmire immediately takes issue with how Jeff treats his sister (both physically and emotionally). It gets so bad that Quagmire makes a plan to murder Jeff by luring him on a camping trip… but things go sideways when Jeff catches on to Quagmire’s plan. Jeff seemingly strangles Quagmire to death, but he miraculously survives and manages to run Jeff down in Peter’s car.
