The Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer’s credit to screenwriter and producer J. K. Rowling is hardly visible as the author stirs up controversy with her views on trans issue. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and is set to premiere on April 15, 2022. The Fantastic Beasts franchise is a spin-off of the hugely popular Harry Potter series, which spanned 7 books and 8 films. The first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, received relatively positive reception while its sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, received more mixed reviews.

The mixed reviews of the sequel make the stakes pretty high for Fantastic Beasts 3, but it’s the controversy surrounding the film’s conception that raises the stakes even further. For one, Grindelwald’s actor, Johnny Depp, was dropped from Fantastic Beasts 3 and replaced by Mads Mikkelsen after Depp was accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife. Meanwhile, another controversy arose when Harry Potter author Rowling, who is also a screenwriter and producer for Fantastic Beasts 3, spoke out on trans issues, and many perceived her comments as transphobic. With Rowling’s obvious ties to the Harry Potter franchise, the media has had to find unique ways to navigate around the author’s backlash.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As reported by THR, Rowling’s credit in the Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer is hardly visible. In the course of the entire trailer, Rowling’s name is nowhere to be seen, except for a very tiny publishing rights mention in the final frame. The tiny credit is in stark contrast to the very bold credits given in the previous Fantastic Beasts films’ trailers, which gave credit to her as writer, producer, and even gave viewers a special invite from her. Take a look at Rowling’s tiny credit below:

The tiny Fantastic Beasts 3 credit is not the only attempt at decreasing Rowling’s presence in the Harry Potter franchise. For example, Rowling won’t appear in Harry Potter’s 20th Anniversary reunion which is set to release on January 1, 2022. She has also received criticism from several Harry Potter stars, such as Miriam Margolyes and Daniel Radcliffe. The controversy has arisen from multiple incidents, like Rowling expressing support for Maya Forstater, who was temporarily fired from her job for her comments on transgender individuals. In another incident, Rowling criticized a tweet that used the phrase “people who menstruate” instead of using the term “woman.” After initial criticism, she wrote an essay explaining her views and how women find certain phrases that erase their gender as demeaning. She also opened up about how her experience as a sexual assault survivor gives her concerns about the transgender movement.

An attempt to lessen the presence of Rowling is understandable, but raises concern. The tiny credit seems an attempt to avoid the possibility of one forgoing seeing Fantastic Beasts 3 because of Rowling’s involvement. However, Rowling is the author of Harry Potter, serve a prominent role behind the scenes of Fantastic Beasts 3, and quite necessarily still deserves credit for her work. Regardless if she is canceled, she is still the author and creator of the Harry Potter franchise. Any attempt to remove her completely from Harry Potter is going to be problematic. The best one can do is lessen her prominence, but that comes with the possibility of igniting issues with Rowling’s supporters for snubbing the very one who is at the center of the Harry Potter franchise. Fantastic Beasts 3‘s trailer has found a temporary solution to the controversy with Rowling’s tiny credit, but it is not much of a permanent fix for a convoluted situation.
