Reed Richards has learned about the true nature of Marvel’s Watchers, as the Fantastic Four hero gained a massive cosmic upgrade in the process. In Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, Reed Richards uses Watcher technology to learn more about a deadly emerging threat, the Reckoning, and how they are connected to the great observers of the universe. In doing so, Mister Fantastic just gained knowledge beyond his superhuman comprehension.

Marvel’s Reckoning War is underway in the Marvel Universe, as a storyline introduced more than 15 years ago in the pages of She-Hulk is finally being explored. In Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1 by Dan Slott, Rafael Fonteriz, Carlos Pacheco, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFx, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, Uatu the Watcher sees a former threat return to the Marvel Universe. The Watchers accidentally created the Reckoning before they became observers of space and time and were known as the Luminous. After gifting a planet with advanced technology, the aliens used it to nearly destroy the universe, leading the Luminous to lock them away and become The Watchers. Now, the Reckoning are back and are supplying warring races with advanced weaponry across the galaxy.

In Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are surprised by an attack by the Badoon, who’ve caused widespread destruction (including destroying the Earth’s moon) across the universe. The Fantastic Four head to space to stop chunks of the moon from hitting the Earth but end up encountering Nick Fury. The Herald of Uatu the Watcher tells the team of the Reckoning. He gives Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four a device carrying important information – revealing the history of the Reckoning – which the genius scientist absorbs.

However, absorbing the information from The Watcher gives Mister Fantastic an incredible upgrade as he reveals he now “knows everything.” Reed Richard’s glowing eye suggests he’s learned everything The Watchers know, meaning he’s got vast cosmic knowledge likely beyond his comprehension. It’s a dangerous but valuable upgrade for Mister Fantastic.

Reed Richards potentially gaining the knowledge of The Watchers is good and bad news for Marvel’s greatest heroes. The upgrade means he will have advanced intel on the Reckoning, how they came to be, and how they potentially can defeat them. However, gaining a cosmic power so vast might corrupt the hero like never before. Surely, the knowledge isn’t supposed to be absorbed by a human, even one as brilliant as Mister Fantastic.
