Ubisoft has reiterated that Far Cry 6‘s upgrades from last-gen to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will be accessible at no cost. This repeat confirmation seeming came out of the blue, though it may serve as a response to the criticism recently leveled against PlayStation.

Upon detailing Horizon Forbidden West‘s multiple special editions, Sony announced that some versions of the title wouldn’t give PS4 owners access to the PS5 build. Not only did such a move contrast with common industry practices of late, it also directly contradicted the publisher’s previous promise to honor the upgrade path. Following a torrent of backlash from critics and fans alike, the company reversed course. Horizon Zero Dawn‘s eagerly-awaited sequel will indeed offer a free upgrade to PS5, though all future first-party titles will boast $10 upgrades. Now other publishers feel the need to clarify their stance on the matter with regards to upcoming titles.

In a post on the Far Cry Twitter account, Ubisoft reaffirmed plans to honor an upgrade path for the brand’s forthcoming entry. Those who purchase Far Cry 6 on PS4 or Xbox One will, thus, gain access to a free upgrade for their respective current-gen console. The game’s pre-order page on Ubisoft’s website boasts a similar message for curious customers. “Purchase Far Cry 6 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 and upgrade your game to the next-gen version (PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X) at no additional cost,” reads one line of text.

Though most developers and publishers have provided players with seamless upgrade paths, Sony isn’t the only company to charge extra. Many may recall that Control did not receive a free upgrade for its Ultimate Edition, either.

Ubisoft Toronto’s Far Cry 6 remains on track to launch early this fall. Like a few of its predecessors, the new entry in the long-running series will thrust players into a tropical setting, though this time the locale in question is the fictional island of Yara – an island clearly inspired by Cuba. Assuming the role of guerrilla fighter Dani Rojas, portrayed as male or female, players will take the fight to Yara’s ruthless dictator Antón Castillo.
