Noah Hawley, showrunner of FX’s Fargo thinks that the show should end after season 5. Inspired by the Coen brothers’ lauded 1996 film of the same name, Fargo is an anthology series that takes place in the same universe with each season featuring a different cast and location, but with all relating back to the town of Fargo, North Dakota. Fargo season 4, the show’s most recent, starred Chris Rock, Jessie Buckley, and Jason Schwartzman and took place in 1950s Kansas City, Missouri. It followed a gang war for control of the city led by Schwartzman and Rock’s characters. Previous seasons have starred Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, and Kirsten Dunst.

Hawley has been the lead creative on the project since its inception in 2014 and was most recently announced to be helming the upcoming Alien series for FX based on Ridley Scott’s acclaimed 1979 science-fiction film and its subsequent sequels. He also served as showrunner for FX’s X-Men series Legion which, despite decreasing ratings, was able to come to a natural conclusion in 2019.

During an interview with Vanity Fair Hawley discussed both his upcoming thriller novel Anthem and the Alien TV series. He was also asked whether there would be a season 5 of Fargo. Hawley responded by saying:

Yeah, I think so. I don’t have it yet. I have pieces that will have to survive. They’re not connected. I think it would be good to create an ending, and deliberately come to something, knowing it’s the last one and see how one might wrap up this anthology.

Hawley has previously expressed that he has an idea in mind for Fargo season 5 but with so much on his plate, it makes sense that he may wish to bring the series to a natural end akin to Legion. It would make sense then to want to go out on a high. While the latest season of Fargo wasn’t as acclaimed as the previous three – which all received Golden Globe nominations – it was still generally well received, and Hawley would likely wish to keep this momentum going.

While each season of Fargo is relatively self-contained within its location and respective decade, there are often a number of connections that link the various narratives together. Wrapping the show up well could prove to be a difficult task. While Hawley acknowledges that there are no concrete plans as of yet for what the season may entail, other than it may be set in the recent past, knowing that there is a definite end in sight should hopefully make the process easier. However, it’s likely that Hawley will want to finish work on one series before starting on another. Until then, Fargoviewers will just have to sit tight for any further information on the highly-anticipatedconclusion.
