Warning! Spoilers for Silver Surfer: Rebirth #2 by Marvel Comics

The build-up to the Avengers encounter with Thanos in the MCU’s Avengers: Endgame was palpable, as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were ready to take down the villain and use the Infinity Stones to rewrite reality to bring back those snapped away. However, it turned out Thanos, who built his own farm, had used the Infinity Stones to destroy the Infinity Stones, turning the powerful gems into dust. While the reveal served the storyline, the Infinity Stones sudden destruction felt like a copout. Now, Marvel Comics is rectifying that by showing more of farmer Thanos.

After erasing half of the universe’s population with the Infinity Stones, Thanos made refuge in the Garden, where he created his farm to live in peace after accomplishing his ultimate quest. Then, not needing the Infinity Stones or to be tempted by them, the Mad Titan destroyed them. In doing so, he scarred himself but ensured the heroes couldn’t use the gems to undo his most significant action. While the destruction of the Infinity Stones gave the Avengers a reason to go back in time, Thanos simply destroying them felt odd and rushed.

In Silver Surfer: Rebirth #2 by Ron Marz, Ron Lim, Don Ho, Israel Silva, and VC’s Joe Sabino, readers are taken back to Thanos’ farm seen from the original Infinity Gauntlet series and other cosmic adventures. It’s there, Thanos reveals his home to the Silver Surfer, telling the hero that his crops are almost ready and that it “took a great deal of effort” to grow them. The comic shows the more human side of Thanos and features the paradise he sought after defeating the Avengers.

Ultimately, seeing Thanos want to save his farm and home after someone stole the Reality Stone shows how the MCU’s take on his paradise proved to be a copout. Destroying the Infinity Stones so quickly didn’t allow the Avengers to see the life Thanos sought out after the snap. His home helps emphasize Thanos’ goal for snapping life – so that the rest of the universe, including his farm, could prosper. Plus, the added tension that Thanos has lost one of the Infinity Stones instead of them simply being destroyed could have allowed the character’s story to continue – instead of his sudden death at the hands of Thor.

Even after committing the snap and becoming even more feared beings in the galaxy, Thanos’ farm and paradise help show it was all for a reason – while also keeping the Infinity Stones as an important item in the Marvel Universe. In the MCU, his time on the farm could have been much more fleshed out and impactful, especially after years of build-up. The original Thanos could have gone out with a bang, not a whimper against the Avengers, instead of the copout involving the Infinity StonesSilver Surfer: Rebirth #2 by Marvel Comics is in stores now.
