Just days before its United States debut, Fast & Furious 9‘s early ticket sales are the biggest in 2021 so far. After being delayed a year by the coronavirus pandemic, F9 is finally poised to roar into theaters. The Justin Lin-directed film is notable for its place as the biggest movie this year to roll out without the backing of a streaming release. The early prospects for Fast & Furious 9 are looking good, particularly since it has become a success internationally. Already, the movie has amassed a worldwide total of $292.4 million, which puts it second only to Godzilla vs. Kong in terms of 2021 Hollywood releases.

The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on the box office for the past year, but there have been positive signs of improvement in recent weeks. The double-header of A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella over Memorial Day weekend signaled the start of the summer movie season, with the former boasting the best opening weekend since the pandemic began. Though things have mellowed out somewhat since, the next few weeks are about to get very interesting.

That begins with Fast & Furious 9. According to Deadline, online ticketing site Fandango reports F9 is set to be the biggest pre-seller yet of 2021. It is already outpacing the presales for A Quiet Place Part II, indicating it will become the new record-holder for the pandemic’s biggest opening weekend. The current projections suggest Fast & Furious 9 will open in the $50 million to $60 million range, with some even suggesting it could hit $70 million. While that wouldn’t be breaking records for the franchise (Furious 7 hit a $147.1 million opening in 2015), it would be a huge win for theaters during this shaky time.

Fandango also polled audiences about what they’re most excited to see in Fast & Furious 9, with the “outrageous stunts and action on the big screen” being the biggest selling point at 98%. Despite several major films adopting a streaming release alongside their theatrical runs, the minds behind F9 have insisted this is a theaters-only experience. That element will surely drum up the ticket sales this weekend, though it’s still anyone’s guess as to where exactly it will end.

Summer 2021 isn’t as big as the season usually is at the cineplex, but there are a handful of other major movies waiting in the wings. Marvel’s Black Widow will debut two weeks after Fast & Furious 9, and it too is seeing positive prospects. Box office experts state Black Widow is tracking to open higher than F9, so the Vin Diesel-led movie might not hold onto the pandemic opening record for long. Regardless of who comes out on top, these are good signs for the industry recovering, and Fast & Furious 9 is gearing up for a solid opening.
