Fast & Furious Movies Returning To Theaters For Free In Lead-Up To F9

The entire Fast & Furious franchise is returning to theaters for free ahead of F9‘s release. When Universal released the first Fast & Furious movie in 2001, no one would’ve predicted the success the franchise would go on to achieve. It has transformed from street racing and a relatively grounded story to pushing the boundaries of believability. This has come as Fast & Furious movies have grown in popularity with eight entries in the main franchise, a live-action spinoff with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and more.

The Fast & Furious franchise’s next entry, F9, was supposed to be seen by the series’ massive fanbase last year before COVID-19 forced a delay. The long-awaited sequel will debut in theaters at the end of June and is expected to be one of the biggest box office hits of 2021. F9 continues the story of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew, which includes the return of Sung Kang as Han. The movie appears set to tie much of the franchise’s past to the present and put Fast & Furious in position for its upcoming two-part finale. Before audiences get to see F9, though, there will now be the opportunity to revisit the main franchise in theaters.

Universal announced today a new series of screenings known as Fast Friday Screenings that will bring one Fast & Furious movie to theaters each week before F9 debuts. It will begin next week, on April 30, when The Fast and the Furious returns to theaters two decades after it first debuted. The full release schedule is: 2 Fast 2 Furious on May 7, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift on May 14, Fast & Furious on May 21, Fast Five on May 28, Fast & Furious 6 on June 4, Furious 7 on June 11, and The Fate of the Furious on June 18. The list of theaters participating in the Fast & Furious free screenings includes AMC Theaters, Regal Cinemas, Marcus Theaters, Hawkins Theaters, Showcase Cinemas, B&B Theatres, Epic Theaters, EVO Cinemas, Megaplex Theaters, and Xscape Theaters. Each theater has a slightly different way to acquire free tickets, which requires using the appropriate code found on their website. Tickets will still be available to purchase for those who are not aware of the free promotion.

Even though Universal won’t necessarily benefit financially from these screenings and the free tickets, it does solidify the theatrical experience’s part in the Fast & Furious franchise’s success. It’s a smart way to get fans feeling comfortable to be back in theaters before June 25. With the franchise’s movies spread across multiple streaming services, these Fast Friday Screenings could also be an optimal way for fans to rewatch the series before F9 debuts. That said, the full Fast & Furious franchise won’t be accessible, as Hobbs & Shaw is not part of this re-release.
