Here’s what you need to know about Elizabeth Scopel, the actress who plays Sarah Fier in Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy. The character receives little screen time in the first franchise movie, Fear Street Part One: 1994, but plays an important role in the overall narrative. Scopel makes her proper feature debut in the July 2021 Netflix release, directed and co-written by Leigh Janiak.

Fear Street Part One: 1994 explains Sarah Fier’s origin story through various interactions and character dialogue. She lived in Shadyside around 1666 and received a death sentence after being accused of witchcraft. During the execution, Sarah used black magic by severing her hand and thus securing a physical presence in the region. The gory Fear Street Part One: 1994 reveals that the one-handed witch possessed Shadyside residents over several hundred years, resulting in shocking murders that inspired the town’s reputation as “Killer Capital USA.” In the first Netflix movie, Sunnyvale cheerleader Samantha Fraser (Olivia Scott Welch) awakens Sarah Fier’s spirit after inadvertently bleeding on the witch’s bones.

In Fear Street Part One: 1994, Scopel appears as Sarah Fier through Samantha’s perspective. The awakening scene takes place during the first act, and Welch’s protagonist later informs her friends that she actually saw the Shadyside Witch. Later, when Samantha drowns and dies while trying to outsmart the undead, she experiences another vision of Sarah in agony while being hung at a Shadyside tree. Fear Street Part One: 1994 teases the prequel Fear Street Part Two: 1978 by introducing Gillian Jacobs’ C. Berman (who previously survived an attack by dying and resurrecting herself), and also establishes the backstory context for Fear Street Part Three: 1666, in which Scopel reprises her role as the “Real” Sarah Fier.

Before the Fear Street trilogy, Scopel landed roles in several short films: Local Hero (2010), Ghosted: Get Some (2017), and Skin the Wire (2019). She also portrayed Noni in one episode of Grave Secrets season 2 and Britt Mills in the Chicago Med season 4 episode “Can’t Unring That Bell.” Fans of FBI: Most Wanted may also recognize Scopel as Daisy/Mia Anderson from the season 1 episode “Prophet.” In 2019, she made her movie debut as Julie in the made-for-TV feature Half-Empty, directed by actress/filmmaker Augustine Frizzell (Euphoria, Sweetbitter). In the Fear Street trilogy, Scopel crosses over into the mainstream with her breakthrough performance.

Scopel’s official website (elscopel.com) reveals little biographical information but does include numerous photos from past theatre performances, along with a link to her three-minute demo reel. The actress’ expressive eyes are used effectively in Fear Street Part One: 1994, as they communicate her character’s distress and confusion that translates over to Welch’s performance as Samantha. Scopel reprises her role in Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and the “Real” Sarah Fier emerges in Fear Street Part Three: 1666, while actress Kiana Madeira plays Deena and a different version of Sarah Fier. Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy is based on R. L. Stine’s novel series and will continue to be released throughout July 2021.
