The official Final Fantasy VII Remake social media accounts are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Kingdom Hearts series with new artwork that shows Cloud recreating the cover art from the first game. 2022 marks Kingdom Hearts’ 20th anniversary and Square Enix is already celebrating the occasion with new merchandise.

The Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series have been closely linked since the beginning, with many declaring the first game to be a crossover between the Disney and Final Fantasy franchises. Seeing characters like Donald Duck and Goofy fighting Sephiroth was something that no one had ever expected to see, yet it happened in the original Kingdom Hearts. There were even some cameos from different Square Enix franchises, with the cast of The World Ends with You appearing in Kingdom Hearts 2.8. Over time, the characters created specifically for Kingdom Hearts pushed the Final Fantasy cast out of focus, with Kingdom Hearts 3 lacking any Final Fantasy characters until the DLC was released.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

March 28 marks the release date of the original Kingdom Hearts in Japan, and to celebrate this event, the official Final Fantasy VII Remake Twitter page has released a piece of artwork showing the FF7 Remake version of Cloud. The artwork perfectly recreates the cover artwork of the original Kingdom Hearts, with Cloud standing in front of a heart-shaped moon in Traverse Town. The piece has seen a lot of appreciation from fans, with close to 10,000 likes at the time of writing.

Cloud was a big draw for the original Kingdom Hearts, as he appeared as a boss in the game while sporting a cool new look that was reminiscent of Vincent Valentine from FF7. Fans didn’t have much time to marvel at Cloud’s new threads, as he was one of Kingdom Hearts‘ most difficult boss battles and he would wipe the floor with unprepared groups. Cloud would later be a playable character, as he was briefly one of the party members in Kingdom Hearts Re:coded on the Nintendo DS.

2022 is a big year for Square Enix, as there are a number of anniversaries that need to be celebrated. Along with Kingdom HeartsFF7 and Final Fantasy Tactics are celebrating their 25th anniversary, while the Final Fantasy series as a whole is celebrating its 35th anniversary. It’s unclear what Square Enix has in mind for all of these celebrations, outside of things like Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin and the retro skins in FF7: The First Soldier. If the Nvidia GeForce Now leak is correct, then Kingdom Hearts 4 could be on the cards, and Cloud could clash blades with Sora again in the future.
