The ending of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has opened new unknown possibilities for the story. During the final battle with the Whispers, Cloud and his companions changed the predestined future. However, short glimpses of the events that occurred within the original Final Fantasy 7 were shown to the main characters. The Whispers were an entity meant to control the current timeline, but upon defeated them, Cloud and his friends are free from fate.

Aerith dies at the hands of Sephiroth in the original game. However, now that destiny has been altered, Aerith in FF7 Remake may survive in the new timeline. The confusing story element presented in FF7 Remake is Zack surviving his encounter with the Shinra army. In the events of the original game, Zack Fair sacrificed his life to save Cloud from Shinra. Now that FF7 Remake has created a new timeline separate from the original events, characters who were meant to be alive are no longer safe.

In the original continuity, Cloud and his companions battled against Sephiroth at the Northern Crater. Sephiroth used the Black Materia to summon a meteor that nearly destroyed the world. It was Aerith’s spirit that caused the lifestream to emerge, which delayed the meteor’s impact until it was destroyed by the White Materia. Now that Aerith is alive in FF7 Remake, the events that should have occurred will be altered. This includes events that took place in Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. However, if Aerith survives in the new timeline, it could result in the death of a different main character instead.

The Unknown Fate of FF7 Remake’s Characters Explained

In FF7 Remake, Barret was killed by Sephiroth when confronting President Shinra. He was then revived by the Whispers because Barret was destined to survive. Without the protection of the Whispers, however, other main characters like Tifa can die in FF7 Remake‘s sequel. Cloud develops a strong relationship with Aerith and Tifa in both iterations of the game, and both characters shape who he later becomes in the story. If Aerith survives, then there’s a possibility that Tifa will lose her life in order for Cloud to grow as the protagonist.

There’s even the possibility of Cloud dying in the new timeline. The ending of FF7 Remake Intermission DLC shows Zack alive and well, attempting to see Aerith at the church in Sector 5. A possible reason why Zack was brought back is that Cloud may encounter an unfortunate end midway through the games. Zack passes away leaving his legacy to Cloud in the original game, but Cloud could be the one who sacrifices himself for the sake of his friends in FF7 Remake‘s story.

It is unlikely that Cloud will remain dead if he does sacrifice his life, unless it’s during the conclusion of the story. He may be the main protagonist of the FF7 series, but Cloud could possibly be out of commission in future games for an extended period. During his absence, Zack could act as a temporary replacement until Cloud is revived. Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s timeline has entered unknown territory. The fate of beloved characters is no longer certain and whether everyone survives or not remains to be seen. Until then, fans will have to wait for the story to continue.
