Square Enix has revealed new information about the characters who will appear in the DLC chapters of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, including Yuffie’s new partner. FF7 Remake Intergrade is the PS5 version of FF7 Remake, but it will also come with new DLC content titled FF7R Episode INTERmission. 

The DLC chapters follow Yuffie from Final Fantasy 7 as she sneaks into Midgar during the events of FF7 Remake. Yuffie is on a secret mission for the Wutai government, where she must infiltrate Shinra Headquarters and steal an ultimate Materia that is being kept there. Yuffie is escorted by another agent from Wutai, named Sonon, as they fight their way through the dangerous streets of Midgar in search of the elusive members of Avalanche HQ.

In a preview, Square Enix has provided new details on the characters that appear in INTERmission. She will work with four members of Avalanche HQ as part of her mission. Her contact is Zhijie, who is a fellow citizen from Wutai. He’s the point of contact between Avalanche HQ and Wutai, and Yuffie will follow his directives throughout the story. Then there’s Nayo, a member of Avalanche HQ who monitors the Avalanche splinter cells – including Barret’s group. She’s also the one responsible for creating the fake IDs that Yuffie and Sonon need to move around Midgar.

The eldest member of Avalanche HQ is Billy Bob, who poses as a drunkard so that he can gather intelligence from bars. The youngest and newest member of Avalanche HQ is Polk, who introduces Yuffie to the new Fort Condor minigame that is taking Midgar by storm. Square Enix has also revealed new information about Sonon. He has personal experience of Shinra’s cruelty during their last war with Wutai and has a special hatred for the company. Sonon is Yuffie’s underling throughout the mission, but the two work well together, as his more level-headed personality helps keep Yuffie in check.

It’s interesting to see this more subdued version of Avalanche, especially compared to Barret’s terrorist cell and the original incarnation from Before Crisis: Final Fantasy 7, which tried to wipe out all human life with a powerful summon. It’s unclear if Avalanche HQ will appear in future FF7 Remake games, considering the party leaves Midgar at the end of the first game However, Square Enix seems to be fleshing out the organization, which could mean they may still have a major role to play further down the line in the altered timeline.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and FF7R Episode INTERmission will be available for PS5 on June 10, 2021.
