Square Enix has revealed new details about the DLC for Final Fantasy VII Remake, with the Yuffie content now officially being titled FF7R Episode INTERmissionFinal Fantasy 7 Remake is receiving an upgraded version for PS5, Final Fantasy VII RemakeIntergrade, and players who already own the game on PS4 can upgrade for free.

FF7 Remake Intergrade comes with a number of graphical enhancements that utilize the superior hardware of the PS5. The most highly anticipated additions to the base game are two new chapters starring Yuffie Kisaragi from the original Final Fantasy 7. The DLC content involves her infiltrating Midgar during the events of FF7 Remake and tracking down an Avalanche cell. Yuffie’s looking for an “Ultimate Materia” that she needs to steal from the Shinra Corporation, which puts her in the firing line of the Deepground soldiers from Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7.

Now, the Yuffie content in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is now officially called FF7R Episode INTERmission (in keeping with Square Enix’s notoriously confusing naming tradition). Customers who purchase Intergrade for the PS5 will receive FF7R Episode INTERmission for free, but those who are upgrading from the PS4 version of the game for free will need to buy it separately for $20. The Digital Deluxe version of the game also comes with an exclusive Cacstar weapon for Yuffie in the DLC

New details about Yuffie’s fighting style FF7R Episode INTERmission have also been revealed. Yuffie can use the Throw command to launch her shuriken at enemies, and while her weapon is in the air, she can use Elemental Ninjutsu to strike with fire, ice, lightning, or wind spells. Yuffie also has an ability called Banishment, which becomes stronger depending on how much ATB is used in its casting, and the move can also be powered up further with Elemental Ninjutsu. She also has an ability called Windstorm, which can drag enemies towards her for close-quarters combat.

Further, information about the characters that will feature in the DLC has been shared, as well. The contact between Avalanche and the Wutai government is Zhije, while the members of Avalanche Yuffie will be dealing with are Nayo, Billy Bob, and Polk. Weiss was also introduced, but fans of Dirge of Cerberus will already know who he is. Despite making previous owners of the game pay extra and leaving out PS4 players entirely, what Square has revealed so far about FF7R Episode INTERmission‘s story makes the DLC sound like a joyful exercise in fan service for Final Fantasy veterans.

It’s clear that Square Enix has put a lot of work into Yuffie’s combat style, which suggests that she will have a major role in future FF7 Remake entries (otherwise her mechanics and animations would go to waste) and that she won’t be relegated to optional party member status. She has a drastically different playstyle to the existing characters in FF7 Remake, and it will be interesting to see how she compares to Cloud and his friends on the battlefield if they eventually unite.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade and the FF7R Episode INTERmission DLC will be available for PS5 on June 10, 2021.
