Yuffie is appearing early in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, as she’s starring in the upcoming INTERmission DLC. Some fans may have wondered why Yuffie is starring in DLC over Vincent Valentine, who was the other optional party member in the original Final Fantasy 7. 

The INTERmission DLC for FF7 Remake will add two new chapters to the game, both of which star Yuffie from FF7. Yuffie sneaks into Midgar along with associates from Wutai, as they attempt to steal an Ultimate Materia from the Shinra Corporation. She forms an alliance with Avalanche HQ, which is currently at war with Shinra. The Yuffie content appears to run alongside the events of FF7 Remake, as she’s shown spying on the members of Avalanche after they return from their second bombing mission.

All of the Yuffie content in INTERmission is brand new. In FF7, the earliest Yuffie could be encountered was after the party emerges from the Mythril Mine. Yuffie never mentions any adventures in Midgar and it’s unclear exactly what she was doing before encountering Cloud in FF7. The developers of FF7 Remake are greatly expanding upon Yuffie’s story in INTERmission, in such a way that she’s being added to the main story. This raises the question of why Vincent hasn’t received the same treatment?

FF7 Remake: Is Vincent Sleeping During INTERmission?

The problem with including Vincent in his own DLC is that he is currently accounted for. Vincent seals himself in a coffin in the Shinra Mansion and is there until Cloud meets him in FF7. The timeline confirms that he’s in there before the events of FF7, as the Turks encounter him in his coffin in Before Crisis. Vincent arriving in Midgar at this point in the story would be a major diversion from the original timeline, and it wouldn’t really make sense. Vincent also has an extensive history with the Shinra Corporation and Sephiroth’s backstory. It makes more sense to introduce Vincent after the Kalm flashback, once the player knows more about Cloud and Sephiroth’s past.

The fact that Yuffie isn’t accounted for at this point in the story means she’s the perfect candidate for DLC. No one knows how the remaining FF7 Remake games are going to work, so it’s possible that Vincent will receive his own equivalent to the INTERmission DLC in a future game, once it makes more sense to include him.
