Barret is a punch first, ask questions after kind of guy, and his builds in Final Fantasy 7 Remake highlight that fact. He’s primarily a fighter based character like Tifa and Cloud, but he has the added benefit of being a second to only Aerith in magic ability. He has some great stats that lend to magic being very powerful but fighting is what he’s all about. Since he’s not as quick as Tifa and not as powerful as Cloud, he ends up being a second choice but can still be valuable when the distance to the enemy is a factor.

When building him up, he’s able to have a ton of health and defense which lends him to be more of a tank than a damage dealer with abilities like Steelskin and Lifesaver. He does have Focused Shot and Maximum Fury to deal large amounts of pain and this is where the damage starts. We’ll go through some of the main parts of his builds on both the fighting and magic sides to get the most out of his powers. Be careful about using him though as he’s more of a last case resort but for significant parts of the story, he will be the only option so here’s how we can maximize him.

Fighting Build for Barret in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

His arm cannon is the main focus for his physical attacks and his ability to resist damage is a huge help when the going gets rough. Let’s get into his build and show how each piece can come together to make him a force to be reckoned with.

  • Weapon: Wrecking Ball or Big Bertha
  • Armor: Supreme Bracer or Chain Bangle
  • Accessory: Champion Belt
  • Materia: Fire/Ice/Lightning/Wind attached to Elemental, HP Up x2, Prayer, Revival, Time, ATB Boost, Steadfast Block
  • Summon: Fat Chocobo

Since Barret is a tank, it’s important to take advantage of his strong HP and use him as a spot healer since he’s able to stay alive. If he can stay alive, so can everyone else. As he’s taking the damage, get an ATB Boost to either Revive a teammate or throw a quick heal to keep things going and launch a Focused shot at the same time. If looking to stay close to the fight, Wrecking Ball will be a great help and if staying to the sidelines, Big Bertha will be the best weapon choices. The Supreme Bracer will do until the Chain Bangle is freed up but it, unfortunately, will probably be given to Aerith if she’s in the team.

Magic Build for Barret in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Since Barret is second to Aerith in magic ability, a boost will be needed to get him going into his magic abilities, and here’s how it’s done.

  • Weapons: EKG Cannon
  • Armor: Chain Bangle
  • Accessory: Circlet
  • Materia: Magnify + Fire/Ice/Thunder/Wind, MP Up, HP Up, Magic Up, MP Absorption, Revival, ATB Assist, Healing,
  • Summon: Leviathan

On the magic side of the equation, Barret is going to need MP Absorption to continuously unleash spells as the MP is going to go quickly. He has no other source to gain MP back from so this is paramount. Magnify can attach to either attacking spells or healing spells that will allow for either playstyle. ATB assist is there for the simple fact that if attacking or healing, the same spell will probably be done a few times in a row and this should get the ATB bar pushed in the right direction quickly.
