Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is a reimagining of the first Final Fantasy game, which means it retains the complicated time loop storyline of the original. A new trailer and demo for Final Fantasy Origin have revealed, however, that Stranger of Paradise’s time loop setup is significantly different from FF1’s.

The Final Fantasy series has some overly complicated storylines, and the first entry is no exception. Final Fantasy 1 involves tracking down a knight named Garland, who kidnapped Princess Sarah and took her to the Chaos Shrine. The Warriors of Light slay Garland, but he is actually saved at the last moment by the Four Fiends, who send him 2,000 years into the past. Garland then uses the power of the Four Fiends to send them into the future, ensuring they will be around to save him in the present, allowing him to live forever. The Warriors of Light are able to travel to the past, however, where they defeat the Four Fiends again. Garland transforms into Chaos and is defeated by the Warriors of Lights, closing the time loop and creating a world where no one remembers the deeds of the warriors.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Rather than a straight remake of FF1Final Fantasy Origin is an action RPG, and it’s clear from the outset that things aren’t quite as they should be. There are only three Warriors of Light in the first dungeon when there should be four, the characters are all wearing contemporary clothes that don’t fit the fantasy setting, and they even joke about how they aren’t the Warriors of Light. Square Enix has described FF Origins’ characters as “strangers,” with “paradise” referring to this strange land they aren’t supposed to be in. This is in contrast to the world of FF1, where the Warriors of Light were the destined heroes of legend.

Final Fantasy Origin’s New Timeline

Despite obvious differences, like protagonist Jack’s use of a modern smartphone and the presence of a new boss that wasn’t in the original game, information in Final Fantasy Origin’s latest trailer confirms the basic elements of the story appear to be the same. A time loop occurs, and the Warriors of Light have been forgotten. Garland has kidnapped Princess Sarah, and the party battles Bikke the pirate and Tiamat in the Flying Fortress. What’s most interesting is the revelation that Jack’s full name is Jack Garland. The boss many might assume is Garland in the trailer is actually referred to as Chaos Advent, and when it dies, it turns into Neon, the fourth party member. Square Enix has also revealed key art for Final Fantasy Origin showing a fifth party member – the woman seen at Tiamat’s feet in the trailer.

It’s possible Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is going to expand on FF1’s time loop and have the Warriors of Light become the villains, with Jack Garland becoming Garland and the four other characters becoming the Four Fiends. Creative producer Tetsuya Nomura revealed in an interview with Famitsu that Jack and Garland are indeed the same, adding credence to this theory. For now, this is only speculation, but it seems as if the complicated time loop from FF1 is going to become even more complex.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on March 18, 2022.
