Fire Emblem Heroes Character Poll Declares Controversial Gatekeeper Win

The winners for this year’s ‘Choose Your Legends’ poll in Fire Emblem Heroes have been revealed, and sitting at the top is the ever-popular NPC character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Gatekeeper. Every year, Fire Emblem Heroes has a popularity contest called ‘Choose Your Legends’ in which characters from across the series can be voted to get special versions of said character in the game.

Gatekeeper is an NPC character from the newest mainline entry in the series, Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He doesn’t have a unique model compared to other NPCs, and he doesn’t even play a significant role in the story, yet he always says the same first statement upon talking to him: “Greetings Professor! Nothing to report!” After which, he would comment on the current situation and give his opinions on the game’s current events. He’s present at the Monastery from start to finish, and as a result of his endearing personality and meme-like status, he very quickly grew in popularity upon the game’s release. Fans bemoaned at the Gatekeeper not being a playable character in Three Houses, which might explain why he took home the crown in this contest.

The results from the fifth ‘Choose Your Legends’ poll in Fire Emblem Heroes show Gatekeeper placing a staggering lead above all the other characters. The second-place winner in the men’s division, Marth, has nearly 30,000 votes less than Gatekeeper’s 72,267 votes. He even has more votes than the two winners of the female division combined, Marianne from Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Eirika from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Regardless, all four of these characters will get special summonable versions of them in the summer, with players being able to pick one of these four characters for free.

However, the road to stardom for Gatekeeper has been a messy one. Halfway through the contest, the midterm results were revealed to show who was currently in the lead. When Gatekeeper was shown to be in second place below Marth, the reaction was very divisive among the fanbase, with the Twitter replies demonstrating as much. Some are happy that this beloved character was finally getting the time in the spotlight that he deserved, while others have argued that there were plenty of other characters that deserved the spot more than just a random NPC character. It was and still is a heated debate, with some going as far as sharing their indiscretion with Gatekeeper’s voice actor, Kyle McCarley.

But love or hate Gatekeeper, there’s no denying from these numbers just how popular he is with the masses. Gatekeeper is a character that has stuck with the hearts of many, even if he is just a minor character. It’s unknown if Gatekeeper will get some kind of unique costume for his special alt or if he will arrive in the game in his usual soldier attire. However he arrives in Fire Emblem Heroes, there will no doubt be many who will be more than happy to see him.
