After some production photos and official stills surfaced for AMC’s The Walking Dead, we finally have our first look at a full cast shot.

The Walking Dead is based on an ongoing black and white comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. It has a fairly basic zombie apocalypse storyline: it flows small-town cop Rick Grimes who, along with a band of other survivors, tries to survive a world overrun by flesh-eating zombies.

Considering the amount of movies that feature the groaning undead, it’s about time that we get to see the horror sub-genre explored on the small screen in such a way (although you might remember a 2008 British fast-running zombie series called Dead Set). And by the looks of what we’ve seen so far – including this new cast pic – The Walking Dead is going to be a must-see.

An obvious thing people were wondering about when the Walking Dead TV series was first announced was if it would be in black and white like the comic. Clearly from the images released so far that’s not the case, but that’s not to say it’s going to look like Speed Racer, either. Perhaps it will have a sort of washed-out, bleak look to it in the same vein as The Road (not quite to the same extent but you get my point). After all, a world overrun by zombies isn’t exactly going to be full of joy.

What may be the biggest draw for me is the fact that Frank Darabont is heavily involved. Although I personally don’t care too much for The Green Mile, his Shawshank Redemption is easily one of the best movies of all time and The Mist is pretty solid. He’s a real talent and I can’t wait to see how he does with the well-trodden zombie genre.

If you’re planning on attending Comic Con this year, The Walking Dead will have a panel featuring a lot of the cast and creator/director/exec producer Frank Darabont. The panel will take place between 11:30am-12:30pm on Friday July 23rd in Room 6BCF.
