While the Fitbit Versa 3 is fitted with technology that aims to address most of its predecessor’s shortcomings, the Fitbit Versa 2 can still contend with its successor in certain areas. It’s been almost a year since the Fitbit Versa 2 hit stores, showing its sizable discrepancies with the likes of more capable smartwatches, including the Apple Watch.

Of course, the latest Fitbit Versa 3 is hoping to make up for that by improving on its predecessor’s technology instead of overhauling its seemingly prosaic design. Aesthetic changes are clearly not the focus here, as the Versa 3’s shape and looks are reminiscent of the previous model, but the rear of the device tells another story, as it appears to have been fitted with better sensors. Speaking of which, Fitbit’s latest smartwatch now comes with health-tracking features that can certainly compete with some of today’s top smartwatches, but at a lower price point.

The biggest change with the Fitbit Versa 3’s specs is the addition of built-in GPS, something that its predecessor badly needed. When it comes to Versa 2’s features like the all-day heart monitoring, the Versa 3 comes with upgraded PurePulse 2.0 technology, which claims to offer the company’s most advanced multipath heart sensor to date. Another upgrade is the addition of new speakers, providing the Versa 3 with the ability to make Bluetooth phone calls. Aside from its new fast-charging capability, its battery can last up to six days instead of 4. Furthermore, Versa 3 owners will now have the choice of using either Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, compared to the Versa 2 which only utilizes the latter. All of this does also mean having to pay a higher price with the Versa 3 costing $229.95, compared to the Versa 2’s $199.95 price tag.

Additional Versa Changes & Similarities

Fitbit smartwatches are known to have some neat capabilities that tend to fly under the radar, and the Versa 3 is no different. Its new Active Zone Minutes feature motivates its wearer to become more active, even alerting them by buzzing if certain fitness goals are met. Fitbit’s inclusion of a built-in GPS also means having the ability to map workout routes and set daily training routines. Despite its notable upgrades over its predecessor, the Versa 3 only costs about $30 more, making it better value overall.

However, certain aspects like its 5ATM water-resistance, 7-day data-recording memory, and the watch’s aluminum casing remains unchanged from the Versa 2. While the Versa 3’s wireless technology might’ve been upgraded to next-generation standards, it’s still very much dependent on a smartphone, unlike other modern wearables that are capable of being used on their own. The Versa 3 brings a lot of value for the price, but for those with privacy concerns, Google’s acquisition of Fitbit might be another factor worth considering.
