This HBO series Flight of the Conchords followed two aspiring musicians, Bret and Jemaine, from New Zealand who moved to New York City to try to make it big in the music industry. The show sees the two roommates trying to work with their band manager Murray to get gigs and performing various songs about their social lives throughout the series.

Although the show has a happy, witty, and comedic tone throughout its entirety there are still moments where the characters treat each other badly, react terribly to a situation, or refuse to work through issues with one another.

10 Both Being Obsessed With Sally

Both Bret and Jemaine become obsessed with a woman called Sally and fight for her attention even though it’s obvious she’s not interested in either of them. The feud ruins a good relationship Bret had with another woman called Coco and causing a rift in their friendship. Also, it’s pretty creepy how obsessed they are as they put a crazy amount of time into finding presents for her, and Bret hand stitches a needlepoint of her face.

9 Bret Buying The Cup

Although it’s odd at first when Jemaine is so upset at Bret for buying a new mug, the rest of the episode makes it clear that Bret’s purchase caused terrible financial issues for the two. Bret’s new cup causes their utility checks to bounce, making them owe more money, and Jemaine ends up attempting to prostitute himself for money. Bret never really seems that upset or feel much remorse for the trouble he caused.

The duo writes songs about epileptic dogs and put on a charity show to raise awareness for the issue. Dog owners and their epileptic dogs show up, but the two go on a remix version of the song including flashing lights and loud electronic music causing multiple seizures.

7 Both Not Caring About Murray

Murray might not be the best band manager, but he tries his best to help Bret and Jemaine realize their dream of making it in the states. Bret and Jemaine never really seem to care much about Murray, except for buying him a leather suit, even though they’re all supposed to be friends. Murray cares about their personal lives yet Bret and Jemaine forgot that Murray and his wife were separated even though he stayed with them after the separation.

6 Both Being Mean To Jim

Murray decides to trust Bret and Jemaine enough to introduce him to his best friend Jim (Jim Gaffigan) and unfortunately, Bret and Jemaine end up hating him. Murray doesn’t understand how they can’t like such a nice and talkative guy like Jim. The two end up calling Jim names and telling him they don’t want to hang out with him again.

5 Bret Leaving Jemaine To Be Mugged

Murray warns Bret and Jemaine that the streets of New York City are dangerous and he refuses to book them gigs at night. They go out against his wishes and two guys try to mug them on the street. The two rap as their alter egos, Hiphopopotamus and Rhymenoceros, but the muggers are undeterred so Bret and Jemaine have to run away. Jemaine gets stuck trying to climb a fence and Bret runs away instead of helping his best friend.

4 Jemaine Dating Bret’s Ex-Girlfriend

In the first episode, Jemaine meets Sally and becomes infatuated with her. Jemaine asks if Bret met her, and Bret casually mentions that of course, he knows her because they had dated for a few months in the past, which Jemaine knew when he first started dating her.

Jemaine isn’t fazed being reminded that he’s dating his best friend’s ex-girlfriend and Bret isn’t that happy about it.

3 Bret Ghosting Coco

Bret became infatuated with Coco when he met her at their shared job of holding advert signs. The two had a good relationship and seemed to care about each other, but Bret seemed to forget that he and Coco were in a committed relationship when his ex Sally returned. Bret forgot about Coco and tried to woo Sally, causing Coco to go through Jemaine to tell Bret she wanted to break up with him.

2 Both Dismissing Mel

Although it makes sense that Bret and Jemaine should draw the line at some point with their obsessive fan Mel (Kristen Schaal) they often make the mistake of not appreciating her loyalty and commitment. She often wants more than either Bret or Jemaine can or would want to give her, but they should be able to balance appreciating her and not giving in to her cringey fantasies. They often take her for granted by ignoring her and dismissing her at every interaction.

1 Both Quitting The Band Multiple Times

Bret and Jemaine claim to be serious about their band duo, and yet they allow little disagreements to constantly break up their musically talented band. Although they always stay friends, roommates, and bandmates it’s still a tumultuous relationship between the musical duo who are best friends. They both are often quite selfish and refuse to work together on their relationship and instead choose to quit the band and then forgive each other without much change.
