Florence Pugh Cast As A Killer Robot In Sci-Fi Courtroom Drama Dolly

Black Widow star Florence Pugh is set to lead the cast of the genre-bending drama Dolly. The film will reportedly follow a companion robot who claims innocence and seeks legal counsel after murdering its owner, and it’s based on Elizabeth Bear’s short story of the same name. Following an apparently cutthroat bidding war between multiple studios and streamers, Dolly landed at Apple TV+.

Pugh is slated to portray the murderous robot, but no other actors or actresses are attached to the project as of yet. Vanessa Taylor (Hillbilly Elegy, The Shape of Water) and Drew Pearce (Hotel Artemis, Iron Man 3) are on board to pen the screenplay. According to Deadline, the film has not yet been greenlit as it still needs a director and Taylor and Pearce still need to write the script.

But Pugh’s involvement is certainly a solid start. 2019 was a star-making year for the young British actress who played leading roles in the wrestling drama Fighting with My Family, Ari Aster’s horror tale Midsommar, and Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of Little Women, the latter of which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. But 2019 was only the beginning for Pugh. She’s set to star in the upcoming psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling from Olivia Wilde and recently hopped aboard Universal Pictures’ murder mystery The Maid. Finally and perhaps most importantly (at least to Marvel fans), Pugh will play Yelena Belova in Black Widow, which is set to release in May of 2021. Her involvement in Dolly, as well as its eccentric premise, which draws from sci-fi flicks and courtroom dramas, makes it one of the more intriguing upcoming film projects.
