New England Patriots football star Rob Gronkowski has joined the cast of Joe Carnahan’s Boss Level. Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo also star in the action movie from the Smokin’ Aces and A-Team writer-director. Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts is reportedly also circling the project.

Boss Level stars Grillo as a retired special forces soldier who finds himself trapped in a perpetual loop that sees him dying every day only to be reborn. The Borey Brothers (Open Grave) wrote the script, whose premise recalls both Edge of Tomorrow and Groundhog Day. Details about Mel Gibson’s character have yet to be revealed, but we can safely assume he will be nuts. Annabelle Wallis and Will Sasso also star.

As reported by The Tracking Board, NFL star Rob Gronkowski will join Grillo and Gibson in Boss Level. No details are known about Gronkowski’s character in the film.

An All-Pro tight end for the New England Patriots, Gronkowski has made noise recently about possibly retiring from football to pursue a career as an action star. Reportedly, Sylvester Stallone and Dwayne Johnson have both encouraged Gronk to take that path. So does Gronk’s casting in Boss Level mean he will follow through on his plan to leave the Patriots for the entertainment world? Tom Brady would surely be sad to see one of his favorite targets go. Gronkowski’s prior credits include cameos as himself in Entourage, Family Guy and The Clapper. He has played someone other than himself a few times, including a role in 2017’s Deported as Party Guy Jake.

NFL stars making the leap to the big screen is of course nothing new. Hall-of-Famer Jim Brown first blazed that trail in the 1960s, famously phoning in his retirement from the Browns while on the set of The Dirty Dozen. A few players have gone on to significant careers in acting, including Fred “The Hammer” Williamson, Carl Weathers, and Terry Crews. Last year, former cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha even garnered some awards buzz for his performance in the Indie film Crown Heights. Others like Brian Bosworth and Howie Long were less successful in making the transition. O.J. Simpson of course also followed the path from the NFL to Hollywood, starring in everything from Capricorn One to the Naked Gun movies, before veering off course into infamy.

Boss Level happens to be filming right now, so Gronkowski’s participation won’t overlap with any official Patriots off-season activities like training camp. Still, Patriots fans may want to worry about losing their star tight end to the bright lights of Hollywood. Making movies is a lot less painful than playing pro football – and you don’t have Bill Belichick glaring at you when you mess up.
