SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sarah Marshall

Kristen Bell’s Sarah gives the movie its namesake. She is a television star and dumps Peter after years of their relationship being stagnant. She cites one week where Peter wears sweatpants every day as evidence of his growing apathy. She is often cheerful and pleasant.

She can be helpful like when she gifts Peter a container to keep his cereal fresh for the gargantuan bowls audiences see him eat out of. However, Sarah presents several unlikable qualities. She is duplicitous and cheats on Peter for a year without telling him. She is condescending to Peter about his Dracula musical and doesn’t take him seriously. She is rude to Aldous, and is left by both him and Peter.

Aldous Snow

Russell Brand plays Aldous Snow. Some fans say Snow gives Forgetting Sarah Marshall some of its best quotes. He is a rock star and the new boyfriend to Sarah after they develop a relationship while she is with Peter. He’s selfish and seems unbothered when Peter discovers their affair was longer than Sarah tells him.

He is rude to Sarah when they go out to eat with Peter and Rachel Jansen. One of the waiters at the resort, Matthew Van Der Wyk, is a huge fan of Snow’s. However, Snow doesn’t appreciate his fandom and ignores him. He doesn’t listen to the CD he makes for him. He doesn’t do much for others, despite singing about his care for world issues.

Matthew Van Der Wyk

Matthew is played by Jonah Hill. He is a waiter at the Turtle Bay Resort. He is also a big fan of one of its guests, Aldous Snow. He is often presented trying to talk to Aldous or waiting on Peter.

Matthew is complimentative, especially of Aldous. However, he crosses boundaries multiple times. He oversteps and bothers Aldous, as well as Peter when he is with him. He becomes resentful of Aldous and mocks him using a fake English accent.

Liz Bretter

Liz is the wife of Peter’s stepbrother Brian. Audiences see her when Peter and Brian video chat when he is in Hawaii. She is cheerful, and almost always presented with a smile on her face.

However, Liz is rude. When Brian and Peter take calls, she butts in on their conversations. She is nefarious. Sometimes, she sneaks into the room to listen to them without Peter knowing. These actions underscore her lack of care for the privacy of others.

Peter Bretter

Jason Segel’s Peter is the protagonist in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. After Sarah dumps him, he takes it out on Brian, critiquing his wife. He flies off the handle multiple times and calls Sarah “the devil” when they try to reconcile. He is unpleasant and mopes after he is left by Sarah.

However, Peter is mostly likable. He is kind to almost everyone he meets in Hawaii. He even warms up to Aldous after getting to know him, despite his actions helping solidify his and Sarah’s breakup. He is chivalrous and takes a beating in order to remove a nude photo of Rachel from a public bathroom for her.

Chuck / Kunu

Paul Rudd plays Chuck. Some fans say Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of Paul Rudd’s best movies. Chuck, also known as Kunu, is a supporting role. He plays a surfing instructor who helps Peter learn the sport.

Chuck is goofy and cheerful. He is almost always presented with a massive grin. However, he is air-headed. He isn’t very helpful when Aldous gets in a surfing accident, and Peter has to yell some sense into him.

Brian Bretter

Brian is played by Bill Hader. He is Peter’s stepbrother. He helps him through his struggles in getting over Sarah. He deletes the old pictures of Sarah Peter is obsessing over. He goes to talk to single women with Peter when he asks, even though he doesn’t want to.

Brian gives advice to Peter incrementally during his visit to Hawaii. Brian yells at Peter after he insults Brian’s wife. However, this is a rare moment when Brian isn’t being helpful and pleasant to Peter.

Rachel Jansen

Mila Kunis gives audiences one of her best roles with Rachel Jansen in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She is a receptionist at the Turtle Bay resort. Peter develops a relationship with her. She is outgoing and cheerful. She supports Peter’s musical passion.

Rachel is funny and charismatic, as everyone at the resort seems to be friends with her. She is adventurous and pushes Peter to challenge himself when they go cliff jumping. She sometimes becomes aggressive when she confronts her ex-boyfriend and when Peter confesses his indiscretion with Sarah. However, she is extremely likable and proves to be forgiving in the film’s final sequences.
