Former Warner Bros. executive Greg Silverman defends Zack Snyder and his DC Extended Universe movies. Previously known as the director of Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen, Snyder was the DCEU’s primary architect when it all began back in 2013. He directed the first two films in the franchise, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and began production as the director of the franchise’s first major team-up, Justice League, though he left the project midway through due to personal reasons.

After Snyder’s departure, Joss Whedon was brought on to finish the film, the ensuing controversy behind which is well-known. This led to the release of Snyder’s much-ballyhooed 4-hour, R-rated director’s cut of Justice League, which was released on HBO Max last March, and was considered a vast improvement upon the original. Despite renewed interest in what has been dubbed the SnyderVerse (the director’s original 5-film vision for the DCEU), Warner Bros. seemingly has no interest in bringing him back to the franchise. Nevertheless, Snyder has remained a producer on recent DCEU installments including Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad.

Now, a former Warner Bros. executive is speaking out in defense of the frequently maligned filmmaker. In response to a fan claiming that if anyone other than Zack Snyder had directed Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, the movies would be critically acclaimed, Greg Silverman replied “I couldn’t agree more.” The former WB exec went on to share his suspicion that Snyder’s “kindness, openness, and enthusiasm created an environment for critics to undervalue his work.” Read what he had to say below:

Silverman is far from the first person to attest to Snyder’s quality of character. His close friend and filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who worked with him in various capacities on his DCEU installments, has also called Snyder likable and enthusiastic. While many who have worked with Snyder have vouched for his character, what’s more controversial is the actual quality of his films, his entries into the DCEU being the most scrutinized.

Snyder’s first two DCEU movies were simply not well-received among critics, though they fared much better with fans, and the Snyder Cut did well with both parties. While the claim that Zack Snyder‘s character is what caused critics to undervalue his work is impossible to verify, he is undoubtedly one of the most divisive filmmakers working today, and that was true pre-DCEU with films like Sucker Punch. Perhaps his future films like Rebel Moon and Planet of the Dead will fare better amongst critics.
