The popular battle royale game Fortnite just released a new skin featuring Will Smith’s likeness as a recreation of his character Michael Lowrey in Michael Bay’s 1995 film Bad BoysFortnite has been adding popular celebrities like J Balvin to its collection of purchasable skins, and this Will Smith skin looks to be following that trend.

As a free-to-play title, Fortnite stays profitable and relevant through a steady release of paid content, often themed around or featuring characters and concepts from other popular properties. This content can include exclusive emotes, virtual accessories, or complete skins for player characters. This downloadable content has no impact on the actual gameplay of Fortnite, but can help players stay engaged with the game by keeping things fresh with new visuals and unique animations for things like melee combat. While some of these cosmetics are free, the overwhelming majority of them have to be purchased with V-Bucks, Fortnite‘s virtual currency.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Fans of Fortnite were expecting this Michael Lowrey skin after a Rick-and-Morty-centric leak earlier this month, but it wasn’t until yesterday that the news was officially announced via Fortnite‘s Twitter. The Tweet was accompanied by an image of the new skin and the peripheral accessories also available for purchase. For 1,500 V-Bucks, players will gain access to the Michael Lowrey skin and the Detective’s Duffel Back Bling. The Loose Cannon Cutters pickaxe replacement is also available for an additional 500 V-Bucks. The entire Will Smith-Michael Lowrey set can be purchased for a total of 2,000 V-Bucks, or $20 USD.

Fans of the Bad Boys movies will likely be pleased with this new addition, but it is raising some eyebrows among other Fortnite players. Fortnite Season 7 features an alien invasion theme, and Will Smith’s acting credits include more than a few alien-related roles; Among the most popular are his appearances in films like Independence Day and Men In Black. Although it isn’t an alien-invasion story, one could argue that Smith’s turn as Robert Neville in I Am Legend would still have been more appropriate than his role as Lowrey, considering that unlike the aforementioned movies, the Bad Boys films have no supernatural or science-fiction aspects to them.

Epic’s choice to feature one of Smith’s less iconic characters could have very well come down to licensing issues or other complications, and several players will surely enjoy the novelty of playing as Will Smith regardless of what character he is attached to. Still, some might have concerns with the hefty price tag attached to this cosmetics set, as $20 could be seen as a bit steep for content that has no effect on gameplay. Paid content is par for the course with free-to-play games though, so many fans will likely appreciate this Bad Boys skin regardless of the cost.

Fortnite is available on PC, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5.
