Samus Aran from Metroid has been apparently spotted in the latest issue of the Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point comic. The unlikely tease comes hot on a previous rumor’s heels, as Samus’s planned appearance in Fortnite was revealed in documents exposed by the ongoing Epic vs. Apple court case.

At the beginning of May, the commencement of the Fortnite vs. Apple trial (being fought over Fortnite‘s removal from the iOS App Store) revealed oodles of enticing information, including content planned for the popular battle royale game. Various gameplay modes, events, and character skins have been discovered, such as as Naruto, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Metroid’s Samus Aran. Interestingly, the lattermost skin was mentioned alongside already-featured bounty hunter skins from Chapter 2, Season 5, which could imply that the plan to add a Samus skin was scrapped. The latest evidence, however, may suggest the opposite.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Samus Aran skin leak seems to have gotten a nod in issue #3 of Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point crossover comic, as spotted by GamesRadar. In the background of one panel, the character’s distinct silhouette can be spotted next to a couple of other characters’. It’s a major hint, as Samus is the best-known pop culture icon to sport such large, spherical shoulder pauldrons on her otherwise slender armor. Interestingly, the silhouette is positioned and colored in such a way that it’s easy to miss the character, especially compared to a number of more  heroes slightly below, giving her apparent inclusion the air of a secret Easter egg than an overt, sanctioned tease.

Fortnite has reached a point where both original and licensed character skins are appearing on a regular basis, but such a stable pace doesn’t prevent the community from designing their own cosmetics. The latest concept of a cheerful Monki skin suggested by a well-known illustrator was especially good, and it would fit right at home in Fortnite as an official skin. While the ape’s silly face is based on a popular monkey emoji, the character’s equipment was inspired by the existing Peely character, a bright-yellow banana who serves as one of the game’s de facto mascots.

Put simply, it’d be really cool to see a Fortnite art style interpretation of Samus Aran, and it’s worth wondering if the character’s original, protruding armor design would be too bulky for the battle royale’s hitboxes. Skin designers might go for a slimmer look to better fit the general portrayal of human models, reducing the size of Samus’s pauldrons. Additionally, a Zero Suit alternative cosmetic variant is also an exciting possibility. But while Epic is seemingly hinting at Samus’ imminent addition to the game, the unlikely tease in the official comic might just end up being an fun reference for in-the-know-fans.

Fortnite is available on all platforms.
