Season 8 of Fortnite is well underway, and the ominous Cubes have been wreaking havoc on the island as they follow the lead of the golden Queen Cube. With the reveal of this season’s secret skin, the Cube Queen, the mystery behind the trans-dimensional Cubes thickens, leaving many players likely speculating about what they actually are.

So far in Season 8 of Fortnite, the Cubes have corrupted reality with The Sideways, letting this hostile alternate dimension bleed into the island through portals called Anomalies. They’ve covered the map in mysterious Sideways Zones, low-gravity pockets of this reality in which players are unable to build.

Cubes first came to Fortnite in Chapter 1: Season 5 with community-named Kevin appearing after a lightning strike from the Sky Rift. At the end of Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 7, players discovered that the Mothership had been powered by thousands of these cubes after Doctor Slone’s betrayal, which destroyed the ship and sent the Cubes plummeting to the island below. Now, in Season 8, Fortnite’s Cubes have converged and broken apart at The Aftermath, allowing the Cube Queen to emerge above the golden cube.

What Are Fortnite’s Cubes?

Fortnite Season 8’s Cubes spread corruption across the island as they travelled, ultimately meeting at what is now marked as The Convergence. In addition to the six purple Cubes that landed on Fortnite’s map, the golden Cube and the blue Cube (which was rebooted in the Mothership) also touched down. The golden Queen Cube activated each of these six and led them towards The Convergence as they began multiplying, followed by their own trails of tiny Cubes. Fortnite’s blue Cube, however, has yet to move, and it’s unclear whether it will be friend or foe to players later on. For now, however, players can recharge their shields by standing near it.

Fortnite Cubes also created portals through which players are able to enter The Sideways to fight Cube Monsters and obtain special weapons. The nature of this alternate dimension is still unknown, but the area is low-gravity, much like the runes that Chapter 1’s Cube, Kevin, imprinted on the ground. The Sideways Weapons, like the Sideways Rifle and the Sideways Minigun, gain power as they heat up and can be upgraded to Mythic rarity with Cube Monster Parts.

While the Sideways is as mysterious as the Cubes that brought it, it’s clear from the Season 8 Battle Pass trailer that Fortnite’s Cube Queen is bent on the destruction of reality, and the island is gearing up for the biggest battle yet. Whether or not the island will be destroyed as the Queen intends remains to be seen, but as there was a notable lack of map changes at the beginning of Fortnite Season 8, it’s still too early to rule out any major upheavals. Regardless, as everything since Kevin’s arrival has been leading to this point, Fortnite is reaching a pinnacle of action, one that will leave reality feeling a bit more sideways than before.

Fortnite is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Android, and PC.
