Fans have spotted Fortnite‘s chief creative officer Donald Mustard in The Matrix Resurrections. The new film just released in theaters and on HBO Max with no shortage of nods to how technology has changed the world since The Matrix Revolutions. One of the ways it has changed is through gaming and the Metaverse, something that Epic Games seems to be extremely interested in with Fortnite. It seems that The Matrix Resurrections wanted to give a nod to that via a brief cameo.

Last month, a Fortnite and Matrix crossover leaked, suggesting Neo would be coming to the beloved shooter. This crossover has yet to be formally announced, but since Spider-Man: No Way Home also just got skins in the game, it’s possible Epic is trying to give both crossovers some space. It’s also possible the leak was incorrect and nothing is happening, but given the fact that Epic also worked on The Matrix Awakens, it would be an odd oversight from all parties.

Nonetheless, director Lana Wachowski wanted to do more than just let Epic make a playable Matrix experience. Fortnite CCO Donald Mustard and Epic Games CTO Kim Liberi are given brief speaking roles in The Matrix Resurrections (via HYPEX on Twitter), allowing the industry figures to have a bit of screen time with Keanu Reeves. It’s pretty easy to miss if viewers aren’t paying attention or don’t even know what Mustard or Liberi look like, but it’s a fun Easter egg for fans nonetheless.

Earlier this month, Epic Games released The Matrix Awakens, which is a free playable experience that showcases the power of Unreal Engine 5. It allows players to explore a fully rendered city, get into a violent car chase with agents, and get some meta interactions with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. It’s a really impressive technical showcase that also has fans craving a new, proper Matrix video game. Given Epic’s immense status in the gaming industry, maybe Warner Bros. will approach the developer to make a new Matrix game, but nothing to that effect has been announced or teased yet.

Mustard has helped a number of massive directors and Hollywood studios bring their stories and characters into Fortnite, so it’s rather ironic to see him now in a simulation in The Matrix Resurrections. Whether his friendly relationship to Lana Wachowski will allow Epic the chance to make a new game remains to be seen, but fans aren’t the only ones holding out hope. Even Keanu Reeves wants a new Matrix game and thinks Warner Brothers dropped the ball on expanding the franchise years ago.
