A trailer for Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock shows off the reboot series on Apple TV+. Created by Jim Henson as an international production, Fraggle Rock originally aired on HBO in 1983, lasting for 88 episodes throughout its entire run on the network. The show was billed as a “high-energy, raucous musical romp” by Henson, which dealt with four different species of creatures all cohabitating in a series of caves called “Fraggle Rock,” which leads to the fantasy creatures dealing with real-world issues.

Apple TV+ recently aired a series of Fraggle Rock shorts, entitled Fraggle Rock: Rock On!, which debuted in April 2020, leading to the production of a new revival series of the famed show. A number of attempts have been made to continue Fraggle Rock since the original show ended on HBO, including a movie version that has changed hands many times, one version of which was to star and be produced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The feature film version never took hold, although characters from Fraggle Rock have appeared in other muppet productions over the years, as well The Doozers characters getting a spinoff series on Hulu.

Today, Apple TV+ released a new trailer for the upcoming 13-episode reboot of the series, which features Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley, Uncle Travelling Matt, as well as new Fraggles and Doozers voiced by special guest stars Patti LaBelle, Cynthia Erivo, Daveed Diggs, Ed Helms, and Kenan Thompson. The series will also feature a musical guest appearance from The Foo Fighters as they embark on new adventures about “the magic that happens when we celebrate and care for our interconnected world.” Check out the new trailer and new theme song for Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock below:

Fans of the original Fraggle Rock series can catch up with the original episodes on Apple TV+, which is now the streaming destination for the original series. The streamer also houses the Fraggle Rock bonus specials, including Down at Fraggle Rock, Doozer Music, and Fraggle Songs. The new show is set to debut on Friday, January 21, 2022, on Apple TV+.

Like many new revival/reboot shows happening across multiple streaming platforms, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock is trading on a lot of nostalgia for older viewers, while hoping to lure in a new generation of fans. The appeal for muppets and muppet-related content has varied throughout the years, as Jim Henson’s The Muppets has gone back and forth from film and TV reboots, with the last film, Muppets Most Wanted, debuting in 2014, and the ABC TV series The Muppets being cancelled in 2016. Disney+ again rebooted The Muppets with their Muppets Now series in 2020. Perhaps Fraggle Rock will have a stronger appeal with Apple TV+ viewers, but it’s difficult to call it a sure thing given the shakiness of their charm in recent years. Either way, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock looks like it taps into the fun of the original, with updated sets and effects (as well as special guests), ushering it into the modern-day mainstream, while keeping the flavor of the past alive.
