The Honest Trailer for Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy appreciates the movie’s originality, but also can’t resist pointing out how closely its plot follows The Truman Show. Released in theaters last August, lighthearted video game adventure Free Guy defied expectations to become the breakout success of the year. The movie stars Reynolds as Guy, an affable bank teller who has no idea that he’s actually an NPC in a Fortnite-esque video game. However, when he meets the woman of his dreams, Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer), Guy’s eyes are opened to the truth, and he soon must team up with Molotov Girl to save the game from being shut down.

Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy, who was swiftly become Reynolds’ go-to collaborator. Aided by positive word-of-mouth, the movie pushed itself to $323.6 million worldwide against a recovering moviegoing industry. Because of that, Disney and 20th Century Pictures were swift to move forward with a sequel; 20th Century president Steve Asbell recently revealed that a Free Guy 2 script is nearly finished, and that it holds a “fantastic story.” Further bolstering Free Guy‘s success is its recent debut on streaming, which has allowed a wider audience to find it.

It’s no surprise then that Screen Junkies has now seen fit to tackle Free Guy for its latest Honest Trailers video. The video proves that there are still plenty of jokes to be made even when it comes to crowd-pleasing movies. From poking fun at Reynolds’ constant quipping to throwing in a couple Green Lantern jokes, this Honest Trailer covers all the bases. Check it out below.

It’s fair to say that Free Guy is another movie where Reynolds plays an exaggerated version of himself, but as many have noted, it still holds plenty of charm. The core themes and unabashed appreciation for genuinely good people makes Free Guy a breath of fresh air in the current moviegoing landscape. Though many might nitpick its (relatively) original premise and the countless cameos and Easter eggs packed inside, even the Honest Trailer can’t deny that Free Guy is a lot of fun.

Because of how much pride the movie took in being a non-franchise entry, one has to wonder what the upcoming sequel will look like. Free Guy told a pretty contained story, but also set up a world that could be expanded upon in inventive ways. The plot is a mystery, but it seems likely that Free Guy 2 will still feature plenty of Reynolds’ signature wisecracking style. By then, there might be even more movies to add to Honest Trailers’ list of the actor’s quippy characters. Honestly, that’s probably more of a guarantee.
