Ross Geller is the most hated character on Friends. Numerous attempts have been made to deconstruct him. At the beginning of the show, Ross was the most successful one out of the main cast. His downward spiral was caused by Carol leaving him for another woman. Audiences will have to side with Phoebe on that one. Carol indeed turned Ross into a jealous, and untrusting person.

As Phoebe’s psychologist boyfriend Roger said, Ross suffered from low self-esteem which made him commit compensatory immature acts. The opinion of the majority is that Ross is a hateful man with numerous vices. Here’s why.

10 Air Of Superiority

Ross is knowing for climbing on his high horse. After Carol moved her stuff out, he was left alone. He acknowledged his apartment was a quiet place since his ex-wife left. When Monica suggested Ross get a roommate, the former said it was pathetic to do so.

“Think you reach a certain age, having a roommate is kinda pathe-“

Ross stopped midway to see insulted faces of his friends. He replaced the word pathetic with ‘pathet’ which is Sanskrit for a cool way to live.

9 Found Solace In Women To Fill The Void

One of the least discussed things about Ross is that he found solace in inappropriate physical intimacy. All of these encounters were huge oversteps. On seeing how happy Paolo and Rachel were, he kissed Chandler’s mom.

He slept with the girl from the copy place within an hour of taking a break from Rachel. He fooled around with Janice to make for the empty areas in his life. But, when he found out about Chandler and his sister, he had a meltdown.

8 Mistrusting Person

As long as Rachel worked at Central Perk, the relationship was easy breezy. But the sooner she got recruited at Bloomingdale’s, Ross couldn’t handle the situation. It’d be out of line to say Ross didn’t want Rachel to get a successful job. He did want her to work at the place suitable for his needs, though.

Ross got jealous of Mark even though nothing was going on between Rachel and him. He hounded Rachel at her office with flowers, love bugs and string quartets. Ross failed to realize Rachel was a different person, and this was a different relationship from his and Carol’s.

7 Unsupportive Of Rachel’s Career Priorities

It was okay for Ross to go for a playdate with a woman. He used this woman’s career choice, in that she was a stripper to evoke jealousy in Rachel. On top of that, Rachel and Mark’s friendship didn’t bode well with Ross.

Ross attended professional seminars with Rachel to keep her away from Mark. He didn’t understand the emergencies that popped up at Rachel’s work. The most professional, intellectual being of the gang, Ross found it perfectly okay to bring a picnic to someone’s work.

6 Susan And Emily Are Being Gay Together

There’s no easy way to say this, there are no doubts about it either– the paleontologist of the gang was mildly LGBTQ averse. Again, this began with condemning Carol and her partner, Susan. It eventually moved on to suspecting every woman’s sexual identity.

Emily, for example, was gay to Ross because she was doing poetry readings with Susan in London. Ross couldn’t believe there existed a male nanny. Sandy, the nanny wasn’t ashamed to embrace his emotions and his femininity. The paleontologist took this for bisexual orientation.

5 Saying The Wrong Name At The Altar

Ross forced Emily into staying back by proposing marriage to her. Even when she consented to it, he could never leave Rachel alone. At the altar, he had a cognitive glitch by saying out Rachel’s name. It’s pretty evident he harbored love for Rachel.

He invited Rachel to his honeymoon to console him over his failed marriage. Ross had a proclivity of using women as “friends.” It gets worse when Emily did show up at the airport, Ross abandoned Rachel on the plane to Athens.

4 Obnoxious Behavior At Chandler And Joey’s

Ross’s misused his privileges as a guest at Chandler and Joey’s. He jazzed-up their answering machine before they asked him. He filled their apartment with boxes, the foosball table had to be moved in Joey’s room. Ross took the liberty of installing an air purifier.

He wanted everyone to pitch-in for its cost, he mocked at their living habits. To top it all, there was the ‘keep it down hand gesture’ to stop everyone from talking.

3 Dated His Student

This act of Ross’ is deeply unsettling on two accounts– one, he dated a teenager. And two, the teenager was his student. Ross always fought disturbing things on the grounds of technicality. Cheating on Rachel, or dating Elizabeth Stevens. It’s alright to say Elizabeth was entitled to her dating preferences. But it was illegal for Ross to go out with his student. It didn’t matter if the semester was over or not.

Ross didn’t stop when Elizabeth’s father threatened to contact the university where he taught. He found a sneaky way to deal with it. Ross had seen Paul give a pep-talk to himself in the mirror. Indirectly, Ross blackmailed him with going public about this act. Ultimately Paul was forced to not contact the university.

2 Picked-Up Janice

Janice always deserved better on Friends. The unfair treatment wasn’t only meted out by Chandler, but by Ross, too.

When the gang found out Ross had been with Janice the whole night, the man started to defend himself, and not the lady he was with. Again, it was his situation that suited Janice’s. Divorcees, single parents. Not once did Ross feel the need to protect and defend Janice from his overbearing friends. It was pretty evident Ross was using Janice for emotional dependence and nothing. And that’s why when she dumped him, he expressed disbelief.

1 Played Jump Rope With Rachel’s Career

Ross had no right to interfere in Rachel’s career in the first place. When she decided to leave New York for Louis Vuitton in Paris, Ross assured her he’d make it work. Joey for one expressed his disappointment loud and clear. But not Ross, he went behind Rachel’s back to bribe Zelner into keeping Rachel. Rachel still wanted to go, since Louis Vuitton offered her more money. Ross walked into the offices of Ralph Lauren the second time to persuade Zelner to offer Rachel a raise.

Ross let Rachel go when she spelled out her wishes for working in the fashion capital of the world. But in the end, he drove to the airport to get her to stay.
