In season 6 of Friends, battle lines were drawn between “Mondler” and “Ronica” fans after the Richard attempted to win Monica back. Everyone was sitting on tenterhooks as they waited to see who Monica would choose. However, the viewers didn’t have to wait long as Monica ended up proposing to Chandler in the season finale.

Although Richard was a good guy, he clearly wasn’t the right person for Monica as they didn’t make much sense together. That being said, Chandler and Monica’s relationship didn’t make much sense either because of these plot holes…

10 Monica & Chandler: How They Got Together

In “The One With Ross’ Wedding, Part 2,” fans were shocked to discover Monica and Chandler had hooked up. Out of all the relationships ton the show, this one came as a huge surprise — especially since there hadn’t been any inclination that these two were attracted to one another.

The last time the writers hinted at a possible romance, Monica had laughed in his face and said he wasn’t boyfriend material. It also didn’t seem likely that they would have crossed this boundary since Monica held resentment over him calling her fat.

9 Monica & Richard: Their History

One aspect of Richard and Monica’s relationship that has disturbed fans is their history. It’s not the age difference that creeps people out, it’s more to do with the fact that Richard is her father’s best friend. He knew her when she was practically out of diapers and was the family’s ophthalmologist.

It just seems so weird and creepy that they would cross this boundary when all signs signal they shouldn’t. Plus, they don’t seem to consider how awkward it would be for their families…

8 Monica & Chandler: Chandler Forgetting Their First Meeting

This was another aspect of Monica and Chandler’s relationship that confused fans — Chandler forgetting their first meeting. In “The One With The Prom Video,” Monica finds an old tape that she and the gang decide to watch. When Monica appeared on-screen, Chandler was as shocked as anyone to see that Monica was overweight and wasted no time in mocking her.

However, in “The One With All The Thanksgivings,” it is shown that Chandler had met her before she lost the weight, which means he shouldn’t have been surprised.

7 Monica & Richard: Why Did Richard Change His Mind?

In “The One With The Proposal,” Richard makes his final appearance, telling Monica that he was still in love with her and was willing to marry her. However, one has to wonder when and why he changed his mind — especially when the pair briefly reunited beforehand.

When they first broke up, it was because they had different life goals. Yet, in “The One Where Richard And Monica Are Friends,” the pair engaged in a casual fling. When Monica proposed getting back together, Richard admitted he hadn’t changed his stance on kids. Is it realistic that he would change his mind after not seeing her for three years?

6 Monica & Chandler: The Forgotten Love Declaration

Another moment in Monica and Chandler’s relationship that is glossed over is Chandler’s first love confession. In “The One With All The Thanksgivings,” Chandler and Monica get into an argument after he discovers the real reason why he lost his toe. As a result, Monica attempts to cheer him up by putting a turkey on her head.

At this moment, Chandler tells Monica he loves her, which stuns them both. However, in “The One Where Everyone Finds Out,” Monica looks shocked when she overhears Chandler saying he loves her. It doesn’t make any sense.

5 Monica & Richard: The Gang’s Support

Wasn’t it weird that the group instantly supported Monica’s relationship with Richard? Sans Ross, Monica got instant approval from Phoebe and Rachel for getting herself a date with the doctor. Despite the significant age difference, Phoebe was the first to encourage Monica to pursue the relationship.

Rachel also expresses an attraction to the doctor, telling the group how Richard kissed her on the cheek when she was little to stop her from crying. At this point, shouldn’t Rachel have realized how weird the situation was?

4 Monica & Chandler: Lack Of Support

Another thing that didn’t make any sense was the gang’s reaction to Monica and Chandler’s relationship. Through several points in season 5, each member of the group discovers Monica and Chandler are an item. Once they realize what has been going on, they completely overreact.

While it may be surprising at first, surely it isn’t as shocking or weird as Monica dating someone who was practically a father figure to her.

3 Monica & Richard: Richard Was Always The Outsider

Monica and Richard would never have worked out long-term since he was always viewed as an outsider. Despite him trying to bond with Joey and Chandler, the ophthalmologist was discouraged to find out they only hung out with him because he reminded them of their fathers.

Ross also struggled to bond with Richard because of their family’s connection. What’s more, Monica never really encouraged the gang to spend more time with him. If she wanted a future with him, then wasn’t it important for him to bond with her friends?

2 Monica & Chandler: Chandler’s Terrible Gifts

Considering that Chandler can be the most romantic and spontaneous guy on the planet, he fails to turn up when it matters. On the couple’s first anniversary, he forgets Monica’s present and never mentions it again. On Valentine’s Day, he regifts her a mixed tape that he got from Janice.

Before he quit his job, it was also revealed that Chandler wrote Monica a terrible rap song on another anniversary. If he could afford spontaneous trips to Vermont or give her the wedding of the dreams, shouldn’t he have put more effort into their relationship milestones?

1 Monica & Richard: Why Didn’t They Discuss Their Life Goals?

There was one plot hole in Monica and Richard’s relationship that has left fans confused — why didn’t they discuss their life goals before they started dating? Usually, when two people begin dating, they try to get to know one another. After a couple of dates, there tends to be a discussion about what they expect from the relationship.

However, it seemed out of character that Monica would decide to “wing” the relationship — especially when their age difference kept cropping up as time went on. Realistically, Monica and Richard would have stopped their romance after the first date.
