The last time the writers hinted at a possible romance, Monica had laughed in his face and said he wasn’t boyfriend material. It also didn’t seem likely that they would have crossed this boundary since Monica held resentment over him calling her fat.

One aspect of Richard and Monica’s relationship that has disturbed fans is their history. It’s not the age difference that creeps people out, it’s more to do with the fact that Richard is her father’s best friend. When they first broke up, it was because they had different life goals. Yet, in “The One Where Richard And Monica Are Friends,” the pair engaged in a casual fling. When Monica proposed getting back together, Richard admitted he hadn’t changed his stance on kids. Is it realistic that he would change his mind after not seeing her for three years?

Another moment in Monica and Chandler’s relationship that is glossed over is Chandler’s first love confession. In “The One With All The Thanksgivings,” Chandler and Monica get into an argument after he discovers the real reason why he lost his toe. While it may be surprising at first, surely it isn’t as shocking or weird as Monica dating someone who was practically a father figure to her.

Monica and Richard would never have worked out long-term since he was always viewed as an outsider. Despite him trying to bond with Joey and Chandler, the ophthalmologist was discouraged to find out they only hung out with him because he reminded them of their fathers.

Ross also struggled to bond with Richard because of their family’s connection. What’s more, Monica never really encouraged the gang to spend more time with him. If she wanted a future with him, then wasn’t it important for him to bond with her friends?

Considering that Chandler can be the most romantic and spontaneous guy on the planet, he fails to turn up when it matters. On the couple’s first anniversary, he forgets Monica’s present and never mentions it again. On Valentine’s Day, he regifts her a mixed tape that he got from Janice.

Before he quit his job, it was also revealed that Chandler wrote Monica a terrible rap song on another anniversary. If he could afford spontaneous trips to Vermont or give her the wedding of the dreams, shouldn’t he have put more effort into their relationship milestones?

There was one plot hole in Monica and Richard’s relationship that has left fans confused — why didn’t they discuss their life goals before they started dating? Usually, when two people begin dating, they try to get to know one another. After a couple of dates, there tends to be a discussion about what they expect from the relationship.

However, it seemed out of character that Monica would decide to “wing” the relationship — especially when their age difference kept cropping up as time went on. Realistically, Monica and Richard would have stopped their romance after the first date.
