Chandler Bing seemingly didn’t tell the truth when it came to his confession that he was unable to cry on Friends. The character was played by Matthew Perry for all ten seasons of the NBC sitcom. Over the course of the decade-long series, many fans have pointed out inaccuracies or plot holes surrounding the characters, and Chandler’s ability to cry is one of them.

Chandler’s inability to cry was the focus of the Friends season 6 episode appropriately titled “The One Where Chandler Can’t Cry.” He claimed that nothing can make him cry so Monica, Phoebe, and Joey do everything in their power to make him do so. At one point, Joey decided that Chandler must have been dead inside for his lack of sadness or emotional response to death and despair. Monica made the best effort in making Chandler cry but nothing worked. He even shared that Bambi didn’t make him cry because it was just a cartoon, much to everyone’s horror. It wasn’t until Chandler witnessed the encounter between Ross and Rachel, later on, did he begin to cry, wondering why they couldn’t work things out.

Despite Chandler’s issues with emotion being the subject of an entire episode, he had actually cried multiple times throughout Friends, even before that episode debuted. In the season 4 episode, “The One With The Best Man Ever,” Joey, Ross, and Chandler cried in the veterinarian’s office, disproving the fact that Chandler couldn’t cry. In addition, there are several other episodes that featured Chandler shedding a few tears but the series gave him a reason for letting out his emotions, insinuating that Chandler learned to embrace his emotions in that key season 6 episode.

“The One Where Everybody Finds Out,” a Friends season 5 episode, featured a line by Rachel that revealed Phoebe once used her words to make Chandler cry. She was referring to a moment in season 4’s “The One With Joey’s Dirty Day” when Phoebe yelled at Chandler for not coming to the strip club. It’s difficult to deny that Friends created a plot hole with Chandler and his crying. There were already enough instances before that specific season 6 episode proving that to his lack of crying was an inaccuracy.

Rather than create a larger plot hole, the series gave him a clever explanation as to what “opened a gate” so he was able to be shown crying later in the series. Chandler was then seen getting emotional in season 7 during “The One With All the Candy” when Ross gave Phoebe a bike. He tried to deny it but Joey confirmed that his best friend did indeed cry. Chandler was seen crying one more time in Friends‘ final season during “The One With Rachel’s Going Away Party.” In this case, Chandler was unable to stop the tears by the end of the episode.
