Following the success of HBO Max’s Friends: The Reunion special, Courteney Cox gamely reenacted the iconic Ross and Monica dance routine with singer Ed Sheeran on Instagram. The unforgettable dance number was featured on Friends season 6, episode 10, which was aptly titled “The One With the Routine.” In the classic scene, Cox’s character Monica performed a rehearsed act with her older brother Ross (David Schwimmer) in an attempt to get noticed on the set of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” show. The sibling duo’s hilarious antics made the episode one of the most unforgettable moments of the NBC sitcom.

After 17 years since the show’s farewell episode, the highly anticipated Friends reunion special premiered on HBO Max last Thursday, May 27. All six original cast members (Cox, Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, and Matt LeBlanc) returned to the original soundstage to film the unscripted episode. The special also featured Friends creators Kevin S. Bright, David Crane, and Marta Kauffman who dished out behind-the-scenes commentaries from its 10-year run. Many of the show’s most memorable moments were brought to life by celebrity guests including Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Cindy Crawford, and Reese Witherspoon.

Fresh off the success of Friends: The Reunion, Cox treated her fans to an updated version of the Ross and Monica routine on Instagram. This time, the 56-year-old star danced with another friend, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. In the video, which now has almost eight million views, the pair can be seen doing the famous dance to the beat of  “The Trouble With Boys.” While not as seamless as the original, Cox and Sheeran nailed the dance until the end when the Grammy winner failed to catch Cox and they both fell to the ground. Watch their funny take below:

While Cox and Sheeran seem like an unlikely pair, the two have been friends for a long time. Back in 2013, the Friends actress reportedly opened her Malibu home to Sheeran as he was working on his second album. The Perfect singer also posted their dance video on his Instagram with the caption, “Had a reunion of our own this weekend.” He added several funny hashtags, including “obviously better than Ross.”

The Ross and Monica dance routine was briefly flashed in the reunion special with the cast members laughing at the priceless scene. For a second, it seemed like Cox and Schwimmer would get up and do a surprise rendition. Unfortunately for Friends fans, the moment did not come. Between the air time given to host James Corden and the star-studded cameos, perhaps the 104-minute-long special did not have the perfect slot to accommodate the performance. But if the reunion special proved anything, it’s that all six cast members are willing to get together for the sake of nostalgia. A 2021 version of the Ross and Monica dance routine from the original stars is not too far-fetched.
