Friends is often seen as a big inspiration for 1990s fashion, though the male characters aren’t really considered to be fashion icons. But the men were given just as much thought as the female characters from the costume department, and had just as many great looks. Ross was given a very professorial vibe, which led to some great Dark Academia-esque outfits, though he was also given some wacky pieces to wear for comedic effect throughout the series.

Ross is not really known for having great style, but he definitely had his sartorial moments. And a few of these moments manage to stand out.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Frankie Say Relax T-Shirt – “The One With The Tiny T-Shirt”

Rachel and Ross had a difficult time getting closure after their breakup, and this t-shirt ended up getting caught in the crossfire. “Frankie Say Relax” t-shirts were popular in the 1980s, but Friends managed to bring them back, as Ross tries on his childhood t-shirt to spite Rachel.

While maybe the shirt didn’t fit him quite right, it clearly still looked good on him, judging by the whistles and whoops from the audience. And since he gives the t-shirt back to Rachel at the end of the episode, the look remains in viewers’ minds as a sign of their love for one another.

Holiday Armadillo Costume – “The One With the Holiday Armadillo”

There are a lot of things about Ross that have aged poorly, but no one can deny how much he loved his son. So much so, that he dressed up as an armadillo in order to introduce his son to his Jewish heritage. The idea was of course hilarious, as the “Holiday Armadillo” was Ross’ way of trying to compete with Santa, but this is probably his most memorable look in the entire show. Viewers can only wonder where he managed to find such an intricate costume.

Ross’ plan for this costume ultimately works, as he is able to teach his son about Hanukkah through the Holiday Armadillo, and it leads to a lovely heartfelt ending for the episode.

Red Shirt Over A Henley Top – “The One With All The Poker”

While Ross acts immaturely during this episode, he is dressed very well in a bright red button-down shirt. Because of the film that was used for TV in the 1990s, the red color really pops on screen, helping him to stand out amongst the group. Ross also pairs the shirt with neutral pieces to let the shirt stand out. He is wearing a henley underneath, which was a very popular style at the time, and he also has on some cosy autumnal corduroy pants.

Not everyone may agree that this is one of his best outfits, as Phoebe mentions that his “shirt doesn’t really go with those pants.” But whether or not they match, it’s still an eye-catching look.

Black Shirt And Leather Pants – “The One With All The Resolutions”

This outfit is an example of Ross trying to take a fashion risk as part of his new year’s resolution, and the result is a pretty iconic outfit. While his friends make fun of him, and the leather pants lead to a hilariously embarrassing moment for him, audiences generally see this all-black look as a fashionable outfit. Pairing them with a black oversized button-down is the perfect way to tone the pants down while still making them look chic.

Ross looks quite a lot like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, who is considered to be somewhat of a style icon, although Ross is missing the sunglasses to complete the cosplay look.

Miami Vice Look – “The One With All The Thanksgivings”

This episode definitely had some great flashback moments that viewers may have forgotten about. This includes a tribute to the 1980s show Miami Vice, as Ross and Chandler dress up in very similar outfits to the show’s main characters. Ross goes for a cobalt blue and yellow look as opposed to Chandler’s white and faded red look.

Ross wears suits a lot but never like this, which is a shame. Ross looks surprisingly good with this hair and a beard, so while the outfits are meant to be taken as a joke, viewers may wonder why he doesn’t dress like this more often, since he clearly feels and looks awesome in the outfit.

Gray Turtleneck – “The One With The Blackout”

Ross always knew how to look cosy and academic, and this is apparent in the number of turtleneck sweaters that he wore. This gray one is one of his best, as it is super thick and comfy looking. He pairs the sweater with some simple pants, letting the turtleneck stand on its own.

Ross has a similar fashion color palette to his sister Monica, in that he wears a lot of grays, reds, and blacks. These colors go great with his dark hair, and since the gray is a light shade he still manages to stand out against the darkness of the episode’s blackout. It’s a shame that this outfit gets torn up by the attack of Paolo’s cat.

Plaid Shirt – “The One With The Prom Video”

Ross wears plaid shirts multiple times throughout the show, including the moment where Rachel kisses him after watching the prom video, in one of Friends‘ most romantic scenes. This one feels a little reminiscent of 90s grunge with its dark color palette, but it still appears autumnal in classic Ross fashion.

Ross was, in the first few seasons at least, meant to be the most down-to-earth and reliable out of the three main male characters. A flannel shirt, which is pretty much a closet staple for everyone, helps get this across, and flannels are often so cozy and warm that it makes it clear why Rachel would find him safe and inviting to be around.

Thanksgiving Football Outfit – “The One With The Football”

According to Ranker, this is one of Friends‘ best episodes, and Ross certainly dresses for the occasion. Viewers don’t often get to see Ross in activewear, so this outfit makes a nice change. He is wearing a dark blue Nike crewneck sweatshirt, with a layered t-shirt underneath, as Ross always likes to layer up.

He pairs the look with some khaki-coloured sweatpants. While one may not expect blue and khaki to be paired together, Ross manages to make it look good, as the gray t-shirt helps bridge the two other colors together. Overall, the look is warm and comfy but not sloppy, which is ideal for playing football with friends in the local park.

Turtleneck And Leather Jacket – “The One Where The Stripper Cries”

Ross goes uncharacteristically chic with this look, which makes sense as he wears this outfit to a college reunion, an event where a person probably wants to look their best. He is wearing a gray turtleneck with a smart brown leather jacket over the top. The colors were very on-trend for the time, and while turtlenecks and leather are pretty timeless items, the combination of the two has just recently come back into fashion in a big way, so Ross can be considered somewhat of a style icon now.

He has ultimately created a wonderful autumnal and scholarly look, while still appearing fashionable. The outfit is dark academia mixed with high fashion, and it looks fabulous overall.

Red Sweater Over Shirt Or T-Shirt – Multiple Episodes

Ross wears red a lot during the show, and often this comes in the form of red crewnecks and knit sweaters. The color looks great on him and he always manages to style it well. Ross is the king of layering, as he always has a t-shirt or button-down underneath, and they add a nice dimension to the outfits.

Ross wears red sweaters a lot, including the times when he finds out that Rachel likes him, when he and Rachel go on a break, and it’s a red sweater that lets the audience know that he is Rachel’s baby’s father. Clearly, this color shows the passionate love he has for her, as it is a constant throughout their relationship.
